Private practice, small animal, rescue/shelter medicine
Students will be helping the teams with appointments, rechecks, and procedures.
Students will work hands-on with multiple emergency, critical care, triage cases. They will also scrub in to assist on various emergency surgeries/procedures.
Working alongside Veterinarians doing physical exams, preventative health measures and minor illness work ups, as well as minor soft tissue surgeries (spay/neuter/mass removals) and dental procedures. We also perform alternative medicine approaches with cold laser therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and cranio-sacral therapy. The student will get to shadow the doctor and also help with restraint and general assisting duties.
The Advanced Veterinary Care Center (AVCC) in Davie, Florida offers qualified 3rd and 4th year veterinary students a 2 week small animal externship in small animal specialty and emergency/critical care medicine and surgery. The successful applicant can choose from externships in internal medicine, surgery, oncology, or emergency/critical or they can rotate through some or all of the clinical services based on their individual interests. Externs will work with a team of specialists and experienced emergency doctors and will participate in all aspects of our busy clinical practice.
Successful applicants will provide a letter of application with emphasis on specific interest(s) (e.g. internal medicine, surgery, etc.) and at least one letter of reference. Covid vaccination is required.
Travel and lodging are the responsibility of the extern but some assistance may be available.
Interns/Externs will practice under leading specialists in their respective fields including but not limited to Dr. Theresa Fossum, Dr. Brian Beale and Dr. David Dychus.
Student will be able to observe in any and all surgeries performed during experience and if warrented will be able to assist said surgeries. Observe numerous small animal appointments, large animal appointments and surgeries and to help with any after hours emergencies.
Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital is an exotic exclusive practice that serves as a referral hospital, but also acts as a primary care and emergency facility. We are fully equipped with a surgery suite, CT, radiology, ultrasound and some in-house laboratory equipment. We see a variety of species including birds (parrots, poultry, raptors), small mammals (rabbits, ferrets, rodents, etc), reptiles (lizards, snakes, tortoises), new world primates and even some small to medium-sized exotic cats.
