Description of Elective Experience:

During the externs time here, they will rotate through specialists, 5 days a week putting in 8 hour days, for ideally two weeks.  In total, they will spend 4 days with our boarded surgeon Dr. Brianna Danielson, 2 days with our dermatologist Dr. Melanie Hnot, 2 days with our cardiologist Dr. Dewey Carpenter, 1 days with our criticalist/internal medicine specialist Dr. Randi Fishkin, and one day with one of our ABVP staff DVM's Dr. Anne Murphy.

90% Equine, 10% small animal hospital providing both primary care and referral care. Externs will observe and assist veterinarians with exams, diagnostics and treatments.

Student will be working with evaluation, preventive medicine and treatment of shelter animals, may also be involved in preparation of shelter animals for elective surgery.Student will be involved in physical exam, diagnosis and treatment protocol of private client pets. Student may be involved assisting the veterinarian in daily surgeries .

The student will be involved in all phases of sea turtle rehabilitation, including stranding response, critical care medicine, diagnostics and imaging, and therapeutics. The student will also be involved in necropsies of animals that do not survive.

The student will be mentored in small animal (90%) and pocket pet (10%) care.  Our practice is AAHA accredited and progressive.   We see a large case volume of internal medicine, dermatology, endocrinology, surgical and dental cases, as well as orthopedics, behavior and nutrition.   As case load permits, the student will perform as primary surgeon, or assistant surgeon on surgical cases.  The student will perform dental prophylaxis, dental xrays and dental extractions under the supervision of a veterinarian.   We place a stong emphasis on wellness care and will stress the importance of regular care and protocols for specific breeds and ages.

Student is expected to assist in surgery, perform physical exams, interpret diagnostics such as: radiographs, CBC's and chemistry panels all while under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian

Student externs participate in the daily medical management of a wide variety of species, including terrestrial and aquatic animals ranging from terrestrial mammals to marine mammals, fish, reptiles, and birds. Students participate in elective preventive medicine exams and management of active and chronic clinical cases. Experience gained includes refining physical examination skills, record writing, diagnostic sample collection and interpretation, as well as practical experience with anesthesia and necropsy of exotic species.

Student will be observing surgical procedures, dentistry cleanings & extractions, and a variety of diagnostic procedures. She obviously will also observe appointments throughout her stay here.

Naval Station Norfolk Veterinary Branch consists of 55 Military and Civilian personnel, responsible for providing comprehensive veterinary service and public health support to a DoD population of over 400,000 personnel and 11 DoD installations in the Hampton Roads area. Veterinary Officers serve as DoD executive agent for food safety and animal care in aforementioned area or responsibilities. Oversee food safety and food defense inspection operations to 103 ships of the United States Navy Fleet Forces Command and 136 establishments ensuring force readiness through the inspection of $500 million of subsistence annually. Ensure access to care for 18,500 pets providing guidance for stray animal and rabies/zoonotic disease control programs. Provides complete medical and surgical care for greater than 35 permanent and transient Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Multipurpose Canines. Collaborate with local, state and federal public health officials in support of OneHealth. Lead subordinate Soldiers, Officers, and Civilians to provide world class public health in support of Force Readiness.
