Description of Elective Experience:

Each spring the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine offers a two week elective in Large Animal Neonatology and
Intensive Care Medicine at the New Bolton Center campus.  This clinical elective is open to veterinary students who have completed their preclinical
training and who have a special interest in equine neonatology/perinatology and/or intensive care medicine. Our case load includes intensive care neonates
(primarily equine) and high risk pregnancy cases (equine, caprine, bovine).  We also attend all dystocia births (equine, bovine, ovine, caprine, alpaca) and any other birth                                         that occurs in the hospital.

Students can elect 2 weeks of neonatology. The elective provides students experience managing these critically ill neonates and complicated pregnancies. Daily rounds emphasize normal
physiology and pathophysiology of perinatal diseases, the use of monitoring equipment (eg capnography, ECG, BP monitor), fetal and neonatal ultrasonography
and various treatment modalities (eg oxygen therapy, parenteral nutrition, positive pressure ventilation, fluid therapy, inotrope/pressor therapy)
required in the management of critical care neonates and late-term pregnancies.

Students will have the opportunity to master some of the following manual and theoretical skills; blood gas analysis, calculation of parenteral and enteral nutrition formulations, establishing and maintaining long term jugular catheters, principles of fluid therapy as applied to patients with septic shock and patients requiring maintenance fluids, interpretation of fetal and neonatal sonograms, familiarity with various types of respiratory support therapy and resuscitation protocols, and a working knowledge of a wide variety of pharmacological agents including antimicrobials, anticonvulsives, analgesics, pressors and inotropes. Consecutive two week rotations begin during the last week of February and continue through the first week of June.

We have 8 doctors, 10 technicians and a large pool of support staff.  One of our doctors is Board-Certified in canine and feline practice by the ABVP.  We have ultrasound, endoscopy, dental radiography, surgical laser, in-house lab equipment, computerization, abundant anesthetic monitoring equipment, and we are proud of our comprehensive pain management plans.  We are AAHA-accredited.

Some of our special interests include reproductive medicine, endoscopy, ear disease, dentistry, and orthopedic surgery.  We are diagnosis-oriented, so an extern would have the opportunity to observe and discuss thorough case work-ups.

The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center provides exceptional equine healthcare, and remains at the forefront of equine veterinary medicine with state-of-the-art equipment and specialists in the fields of sports medicine, surgery, internal medicine, neonatal intensive care, cardiology, ophthalmology, reproduction and ambulatory medicine.

We strive to give externs the opportunity to observe and assist with all facets of our hospital and make every effort to include you in the care of our patients. Externs will be asked to assist in numerous procedures (e.g. placing catheters, giving medications, observe outpatient appointments, scrub into elective and emergency surgeries, etc). If there are several vet students here, you are encouraged to rotate through services (surgery, medicine, emergency/overnight, and farm calls) to limit the number of people in any one area, and to allow externs equal opportunity to see the areas they are most interested in.

The typical day for an extern starts around 6:30am. During the day, you will be asked to help perform daily exams (including TPRs) and administering medications. Also, externs are asked to help assist the overnight intern and technicians (including midnight treatments).

Due to the varying degrees of experience of our externs, shadowing of the interns and/or technicians during treatments is required before undertaking any treatment responsibilities unsupervised. Your clinical experience will dictate the level of responsibility assigned. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with performing certain treatments or handling horses, please let us know immediately.

Description of Elective Experience:

The purpose of the  ASPCA NYC Forensic Sciences Externship is to provide third and fourth year veterinary students and veterinary internship and residency candidates with an opportunity to observe veterinary forensic medicine and the veterinary role in the management of animal cruelty cases.  Prior to January 1, 2014 the majority of animal cruelty complaints in New York City were made to ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement.  As of January 1, 2014 all animal cruelty complaints in New York City go to the New York Police Department.  This is an historic change.  The largest urban police force (34,000 uniformed police officers) in the United States now responds to complaints of animal cruelty 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. In the first year of the partnership, nearly 425 animals were rescued by NYPD and brought to the ASPCA. In 2015, 701 animals were rescued by NYPD and brought to the ASPCA. In 2015, greater than 1,000 animals were rescued by NYPD and brought to the ASPCA. Because animals are so significantly integrated into our society it is appropriate and necessary for local police departments to be responding to complaints of animal abuse.  This will be a model for the country.
