The Rx One Health Field Institute - California is a 2-week field-based experiential learning course focused on One Health core competencies for graduate students and early career professionals from all disciplines. Moving from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Pacific Ocean, California's biodiverse and magnificent landscapes will provide the backdrop for immersive One Health learning. Rx One Health participants develop skills in laboratory and research methods, ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity conservation, epidemiology, infectious disease surveillance, biosafety, biosecurity, food safety, agriculture, food security, hydrology, marine ecology, communications, community and stakeholder engagement, ethics, teamwork, and leadership.
Mentorship to furhter develop students clinical skills to practice small animal medicine in a general practive environment. Further develop confidence in creating treatment protocols, diagnose patients, client communication, and interpret labs/diagnostics.
Well rounded experience not only with in-hospital procedures and daily wellness care, but also with shelter and emergency medicine. Daily responsibilities: Assist our Veterinarians, fellow Veterinary students and technicians with medical/patient care, medication administration, sterilization of surgical equipment, proper disinfection of isolation areas, and assist in surgical procedures.
Exposure to, and training in, all aspects of small animal first-opinion paractice, with some surgical referals from the surrounding area.
Shadowing doctor and technicians at a busy small animal and exotic hospital. We see 50%+ non dog/cat patients which provides a interesting and varied caseload. A intern would be expected to see surgery and medical work ups with a variety of species. Practice management/ownership/work life balance will be also discussed.
Students will gain clinical veterinary experience maintaining captive wildlife in a zoological setting. Emphasis will be placed on preventative health programs, quarantine, clinical pathology, pathology, nutrition, behavioral enrichment, husbandry, and management of a variety of species, including mega vertebrates, hoofstock, large carnivores, non-human primates, small mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.
Dr. Jo’s Pet Wellness & Acupuncture is an alternative specialty practice that focuses on wellness and preventative care in addition to treating illness and disease that have already been diagnosed. At Dr. Jo’s we use acupuncture, traditional Chinese herbals, homeopathy, nutrition and therapeutic laser to complement the care our patients receive at their traditional veterinarian. Our goal is to allow our patients to live their best life for as long as possible. Due to our size, we are able to provide quality, personal care to each one of our patients and clients. We do not offer traditional services for sick pets nor do we perform surgeries. We do see a small number of traditional patients for yearly or semi-annual wellness exams and services including vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention, wellness and senior blood work, etc.
Preceptors in this eight week (US) or 10-12 week (international) program will receive clinical training in captive zoological medicine, including amphibians, birds, fish, mammals (marine and terrestrial), reptiles, and invertebrates. The program is designed in compliance with the mentorship and training requirements of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) Education Committee for a preceptorship.
Successful completion of the preceptorship will provide the student:
- Mentorship with ACZM and ECZM (ZHM) Diplomates.
- Involvement in the medical, diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic management of the collection in a nationally recognized zoological and aquarium facility (American Zoo and Aquarium Association).
- Participation in remote drug delivery, clinical pharmacologic protocol design, radiograph positioning, sample collection, venipuncture/catheter placement, anesthetic monitoring and endotracheal tube placement, gross necropsy protocols, and other clinical procedures as assigned.
- Understanding of husbandry and nutrition specific to each taxa within the collection.
- Knowledge of anatomy, parasitology, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, preventive medicine, taxonomy, and toxicology within zoological and aquarium facilities.
- Experience in preparation and presentation of professional topics in captive zoological medicine through journal reviews, keeper and staff discussions, case report, and in-house seminars.
- Standardized record keeping by computerized system, current with the zoo community standards.
- Appropriate time to complete clinical investigation, literature reviews, and project preparation.
An externship at VCA is an opportunity to practice and gain constructive feedback working along with our medical teams in case management and procedural skills. Students will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. The externship includes but is not limited to the immersion in daily operational tasks such as medical rounds, client communications, diagnostics, and patient planning. They can discuss situations and collectively put together treatment plans. Students will have the opportunity to practice various forms of imagining including ultrasound and radio graphic interpretation. Exposure to surgeries including dentistry are also offered. Externship length is typically 2-4 weeks based upon school programs but can be flexible.
Small animal medical/surgical practice with emphasis on Point of Care Ultrasound. General Practice with busy surgical case load. Equine reproduction practice with emphasis on broodmare management and development of a frozen semen breeding program. Some stallion work. Student will be expected to participate in all aspects of practice including physical exams, diagnostic plans, surgical assistance, treatments, record keeping in both practice settings.
