Description of Elective Experience:

The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is an AZA/AAM accredited zoo, aquarium, and science museum located in Greensboro, NC.  Our 22-acre zoo cares for an expansive collection including red pandas, okapi, pygmy hippos, tigers, servals, maned wolves, cassowary, komodo dragons, and many other species.  Our 36,000 sq ft aquarium includes a collection of large and small sharks, multiple ray species, fresh and salt water fish, otters, penguins, and small primates, among others.  The GSC is proud to offer 2 and 4 week externships to veterinary students in their final clinical year.  All externs will have the opportunity to participate in the day to day care of the animals in the collection, including but not limited to, preventative medicine, recheck, and emergency exams on a variety of species from multiple taxa.  We attempt to offer as many hands-on opportunities as we are able too along with didactic educational items such as journal club and zoo specific lectures as time allows.

Student's time and clinical caseload will vary between on farm routine and primary care dentistry to haul-in referral dental surgeries.  The amount spent in each type of clinical setting will vary depending on scheduling and the students desired type of cases.

Student's will be allowed hands-on time to learn and perform oral examination, sedation techniques, motorized float & odontoplasty procedures.  Depending on experience, skill level, and case load learning dental radiographs and nerve block techniques is also likely.  Most two week blocks would allow opportunities to be involved with 1 - 6 dental extractions and several periodontal cases.

Description of Elective Experience:

During your externship, you can expect to participate in cases with direct mentorship by a DVM who will meet with you to establish your goals on day one, keep track of your progress throughout your stay, and review your accomplishments before you depart. Our goal is to provide you with a set of tools that you will use for years to come. We encourage active participation from externs, introducing them to our clients and truly making them part of our team. If there are certain technical skills you are looking to improve upon, let us know so we can place emphasis on these areas. We strive to provide the ideal environment for you to gain confidence while managing both routine and complex cases on the ER floor. We request that externs select one interesting case to research and present to the veterinarians for further discussion in rounds. These case discussions help our teams learn and grow together; further emphasizing that mentorship is a two-way street.
