The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit biomedical research institution with a mission to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. The Jackson Laboratory provides more than 13,000 strains of mouse model domestically and internationally and  the home of the Mouse Genome Informatics database, and an international hub for scientific courses, conferences, training and education.

Through this externship, externs will be trained on basic mouse handling and technique provided by our trainers, work closely with the clinical veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians to treat mice, attend meetings with the veterinarians (vet meeting, project meeting, IACUC meeting, etc.), and interact with the different departments at JAX such as surgical service, animal welfare committee, research department, biosecurity team, pathology service, and etc.

AAHA accredited small animal general practice with limited exotics (pocket pets, reptiles) with focus on fear free. Students are given a mentor/coach DVM that will be with them on scheduled shifts to help keep students gain knowledge that they need. They will meet with coach DVM weekly, if not daily, to go over cases, discuss concerns, ask questions, and review any topic rounds given.

Northwest Equine Performance (NWEP) is an equine sports medicine clinic and advanced diagnostic imaging center located in Mulino, Oregon. Our knowledgable veterinarians evaluate the whole horse, not just the suspected injury, when developing a treatment and rehabilitation program for your horse. We work very closely with owners and trainers to assess the horse throughout the recovery period and provide detailed rehabilitation protocols specifically designed for each horse individually, not just the injury in general. The advanced diagnostic center includes radiography, ultrasound, CURO, upper airway endoscopy, nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) and a standing MRI. We have the ability to combine our detailed lameness exams with whatever diagnostic imaging necessary to find you an answer. We also offer the best and most up to date treatment options available in equine sports medicine today. We pride ourselves on being informed and involved in the constantly changing field of orthobiologics and regenerative medicine. Our veterinarians work closely with human orthopedic and regenerative medicine specialists to provide you with the best treatment options available for your horse. Students will gain real world experience as to the workings of a large animal ambulatory services in rural, eastern Ohio.  Daily farm calls include but are not limited to herd wellness, disease monitoring and prevention, dentistry, surgery, reproductive studies (palpation and ultrasonography), lameness evaluation, and radiography.  Students will also directly interact with clients and be included in any and all phone conversations with clients. Students will work directly with Dr. Friend, and owner and operator of the practice.

We’re based in the Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) for the warm part of the year and Wellington FL for the winter half of the year; you get to skip the cold, and be where all the action happens.

Excellent team culture, cutting edge medicine, and top tier athletes make this a rare experience in the veterinary world. We want to pave the way for the future of the equine veterinary industry by getting students into clinical experiences early.  I enjoy teaching: mentorship is key while showing the nuances of lameness, ultrasound, xray, and advanced injection techniques (hips, necks, backs, arterial stem cell perfusions,etc.) Experience best in class equipment: digital xray, shockwave, Prostride, A2M, PRP, ultrasound etc).

This elective experience is created with the mindset of setting you up for success in a sports medicine career and building relationships with the best horses, owners, trainers, and farriers in the business.

  • Assists veterinarian and veterinary technicians with animal intake examinations and follow up exams of admitted patients and education animal ambassadors
  • Assists with radiographs and lab specimen collection and interpretation of lab values 
  • Restrains wildlife species for physical examination and treatments 
  • Observes surgical procedures involving anesthesia of wildlife patients 
  • Covers at minimum one four-hour shift/week on our community information line
  • Doses and administers medications; provides nursing care to patients 
  • Performs weekly visual assessment of pre-release facility patients 
  • Responsible for presenting approved research project upon completion of externship and lead two wildlife focused journal club discussions for hospital staff and volunteers 
  • Rotates through animal husbandry areas at the education and pre-release facilities

In coordination with your education plan and curriculum, we are able to craft an experience that is right for you to push towards a successful start to your career. 

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) & Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) programs have a variety of different requirements per program. With that, our focused mentorship program offers the experience where you are specifically externing with one of our experienced staff serving as your mentor during that time. After application, you will work with our Lead Educator and Human Resources to ensure that your experience aligns with where you are in your education path and the requirements of the clinical rotation you are seeking to fulfill.

Students will be involved in all aspects of case management including but not limited to physical exam, rule out list, medical record keeping, caregiver communications, diagnostic test result interpretation, anesthesia, surgery (routine and emergency procedures) and hospitalized patient care.
