Big Rock Veterinary Hospital is a full service general practice that is community oriented and client focused. We place emphasis on client education, internal medicine, dentistry and soft tissue surgery. We also provide urgent care during business hours. Students rotate through each aspect of the hospital under the supervision of a mentoring DVM. Students will not only shadow the doctors in exam rooms but also be able to perform hands on duties such as physical examinations, Needle aspirates, and blood draws. Students will be an integral part in client communication during the appointment as well as for follow up care and bloodwork interpretation afterwards. Under the supervision of the mentoring DVM students will be able to perform dental local blocks and extractions as well as perform soft tissue surgeries such as spays, neuters and mass removals. The mentoring DVM's at Big Rock want students to gain practical clinical experience they can take with them post graduation.

The Why:
At Goodheart, we believe in the value of teaching and learning. Hosting veterinary students who are eager to learn allows us to contribute to our profession and is also a great way to keep our own knowledge and skills fresh and sharp.
The Who:
- We are a full-service small animal general practice offering high-quality medicine and exceptional client service. We LOVE to talk about what sets us apart but hate to waste paper, so explore our site www.goodheart.vet to learn more about us. Be sure to check out our “100 Little Things”
- You are a veterinary student who wants to gain experience in a high-quality small animal practice, has a positive outlook and loves connecting with clients (even if it still makes you nervous), and is ready to jump in and grab opportunities to learn as they come your way. Our externship program is open to vet students in any stage of their education.
The What:
- Our extern program relies on student-driven learning to improve your clinical skills and, for those who are interested, your business acumen as well. In addition to shadowing our doctors during appointments and assisting with surgeries, we may ask you to research a medical topic and present to our team or join us at a community event to connect with new clients.
- We trust your school to prepare you for the NAVLE. We want to help prepare you to be a happy, productive practitioner of veterinary medicine and an important member of your community. We also enjoy helping students with their own extracurricular goals, such as completing your VBMA Honors Portfolio.
- If you would like to preview our Clinical Externship and Business/Clinical Externship Passports that we use as our starting point for each student’s learning plan, please contact Dr. Beth Spencer at the email below.
The Where, When, and How:
- Denver, Colorado!
- We host externs year-round for 2-4 weeks per student. Please contact us at least 60 days prior to your externship start date, and the sooner the better.

The PG Diploma in Animal Osteopathy program has been developed for veterinarians (DVM/VMD) and veterinary students interested in expanding their practice to include osteopathic treatment for equine and canine patients.
We are a busy GP and specialty hospital. We have a boarded surgeon and cardiologist which
compliment a team of seasoned general practitioners. We do a lot of abdominal ultrasonography on a
state of the art GE ultrasound machine. Externs will have exposure to advanced surgery, cardiology,
abdominal ultrasonography, and solid GP diagnostic and interventional skills. We are located in a lively
Philadelphia suburb where clients take exemplary care of their pets and invest the resources into high
end care.
DVM Student will be expected to follow the doctor and team around, immersing themselves in the case, both examining and learning as they discuss the cases with the doctors and formulate plans - in rooms with clients, drop offs and surgery/dental procedures. Based on student confidence and skill level, they may have opportunity to participate in surgery or extractions along with the DVM. Student will never be left alone, but will be expected to participate and help the team during the internship.
Unique institution, as student would be immersed in the two dairy facilities and two calf ranches that Holsum operates. Holsum employs three veterinarians, student would predominantly interact with Dr Stollen (the staff veterinarian), the other vets are responsible for primarily managerial projects.
Veterinarians work on farm with equipment at each site as needed, so a non-traditional dairy production medicine externship. The student would participate in herd checks for the dairies (Mon 5:30AM-NOON) and heifer checks (Tues 6:45-10AM), the rest of the week would be divided up into time spent working with herdsmen in the hospital and maternity areas, opportunities to treat calves, observe hoof trimmers, etc. based on student interest. Students are included on any emergency work or surgical procedures. In the past this has included obstetrical cases (with fetotomy/caesarians as needed), displaced abomasum correction (both roll and toggle and surgical management), umbilical hernia resection, fracture management, enucleation and laceration repairs. Because we are a working dairy there is variability in the presentation of said procedures.
We regularly have team meetings on the dairies and students are welcome to come and observe our interactions with herdsmen, milkers, and upper management staff. We have bilingual translation for training, feedback and meetings. Any students looking to practice Spanish are especially welcome and employees are happy to share their cultural experience.
