The GSC is proud to offer 2 and 4 week externships to veterinary students in their final clinical year. All externs will have the opportunity to participate in the day to day care of the animals in the collection, including but not limited to, preventative medicine, recheck, and emergency exams on a variety of species from multiple taxa. We attempt to offer as many hands-on opportunities as we are able too along with didactic educational items such as journal club and zoo specific lectures as time allows.
At EVCC, externs are mentored by their future colleagues and become an integral part of our practice. The externship experience is individually tailored to each student and your schools requirements. You will truly become immersed into a continuous learning environment, enhancing your veterinary knowledge and skills daily.
We are four doctor practice who treats small animals.
The student will be helping with room appointments (annual wellness exams, sick exams, post-surgical recheck exams, etc.) and getting experience with soft tissue surgeries and dental COHAT's.
Student's time and clinical caseload will vary between on farm routine and primary care dentistry to haul-in referral dental surgeries. The amount spent in each type of clinical setting will vary depending on scheduling and the students desired type of cases.
Student's will be allowed hands-on time to learn and perform oral examination, sedation techniques, motorized float & odontoplasty procedures. Depending on experience, skill level, and case load learning dental radiographs and nerve block techniques is also likely. Most two week blocks would allow opportunities to be involved with 1 - 6 dental extractions and several periodontal cases.
