This will be a clinical experience focusing on small animal medicine, specifically urgent/emergency care.
Externs will receive an orientation where they are given a tour of the clinic, shown protocols for check-in and triage and taught to use the computer software EzyVet with Smartflow sheets. Externs will always be directly supervised by attending clinician or senior technician while on shift. Externs will perform physical exams on all triaged patients and shadow in exam rooms/on the floor with the on shift clinician. They will present their physical exam findings, problem list, diagnostic and treatment plan to the attending. The attending clinician is responsible for creating estimates, invoices and all client communication. The extern will type the medical record for the attending clinician to review. If the patient is admitted for diagnostics and hospitalization the extern will be given the opportunity to pull blood, position for radiographs, perform FAST ultrasounds under supervision of attending and place IV catheters.
Externs will be allowed to scrub in for abdominal procedures and act as a surgical assistant as long as it does not impede on an interns learning experience.
We are a mixed animal practice. We complete surgeries almost daily. We perform herdworking on site and on farm. We see a large number of feline and canine in the office.

We are Veterinary Emergency Group, an organization founded on a single mission: helping people and their pets when they need it most. VEG's rapidly growing group of hospitals has revolutionized pet emergency and urgent care with a client-centered approach, rapid response times, and a highly focused-emergency-only staff. With multiple locations, we offer the flexibility, mentorship, and diverse learning experience you want. Our industry-leading compensation, unlimited CE, and growth opportunities are just part of what makes VEG the place for emergency doctors to work.
VEG's Externship Program allows students to gain hands-on experience in emergency medicine while working right alongside our skilled emergency doctors. Students will focus on learning how to effectively communicate with clients, diagnose a variety of emergency conditions, develop emergency treatment plans and collaborate with support staff in a fast-paced environment.
4th year students are able to act as the primary veterinarian on all cases that are of low to moderate difficulty. They go in rooms alone, get their histories, perform physical exams, and communicate with clients. They then go through PE findings with the mentoring doctor and discuss their diagnostic plan. The mentoring doctor makes any necessary changes, and the diagnostics are carried out by the technicians. The student discusses potential differentials and how they would like to amend or change their plan. The mentoring doctor advises and makes any necessary changes and the treatment plan is carried out.
Our practice provides opportunities in all fields of veterinary medicine. We have a small animal clinic, perform large animal farm calls and run a thoroughbred racetrack practice.
The extern will assist the wildlife health team and will have opportunities to help out field biologists. There is a large variation in the day to day activities which may include but are not limited to: assisting with wildlife captures or chemical immobilizations, assistance with necropsies, sample management, preparation for capture activities, CWD sampling, WNS surveillance assistance, data entry, data analysis, and helping with public outreach.
Students are expected to attend hospital rounds every morning. We have topic rounds and journal club scheduled through out the week in addition to rounds. Students are expected to shadow for appointments and procedures, participate in patient discussions. Primary case responsibility and client communication will not be a student responsibility.
