HARP operates two low-cost, high quality veterinary medical centers. In an average year, over 6,500 animals are treated and more than 7,000 spay and neuter surgeries are performed in these facilities. In addition to caring for domestic animals, the organization remains committed to indigenous species. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is a fully licensed wildlife facility that specializes in caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Annually more than 4,000 injured wildlife of over 100 unique species are admitted and treated by the Center. Among them are more than 2,300 mammals, 1,700 birds and over 50 reptiles.

Our externs rotate through our low-cost clinics, our surgical services (which include HQHV S/N and an array of specialty surgeries), and our kennel services. Also depending on timing of experience, externs can be schedule you to go to one of our mobile clinics offsite that we provide for housing and financially challenged individuals in the area. The main species we see through our shelter are cats, dogs, and rabbits. Less frequently we see chickens, ferrets, guinea pigs, and turtles.

We have an array of programs through our shelter including a medical assistance fund that allows us to help individuals with one-time treatable medical conditions that are out of their financial capabilities to avoid surrender to the shelter (these include foreign bodies, pyometras, amputations etc). We also have a food bank program as well as other resources through our shelter. We can have you rotate through our other departments (behavior, animal care, admissions, adoptions) if that is something you are interested in. Depending on interest, we can also have externs visit our wildlife center with one of our staff veterinarians.

We also see a large amount of forensics, including neglect, abuse, cruelty, hoarding etc. We do a large amount of live forensic exams as well as necropsies.

Woodside Veterinary Hospital is a busy, mixed animal practice where students can shadow a veterinarian and act as a primary veterinarian in certain cases. Students are able to act as the primary veterinarian on all cases they are comfortable with, under direct supervision of Dr. LeVan. Students will gather a history, perform a physical exam, discuss diagnostics, differentials, treatments, and pricing. The student will be provided with constructive criticism to allow the student to identify strengths and weaknesses.  In more difficult cases, the student will shadow Dr. LeVan, but will act as more of a colleague, discussing differentials, treatments, and working directly with the clients. The student will be able to perform multiple surgeries under direct supervision of Dr. LeVan, which will include a physical exam, anesthesia, acting as the surgeon, and post-surgical care. With complex surgeries, the student can scrub in and assist Dr. LeVan with the surgery. Chart documentation will be discussed as well as post-surgical care. Small animal services include preventative medicine, dentistry, reproductive medicine, ultrasonography, radiology, surgery, boarding, and bathing.

The student will also gain insight into the business aspect of private practice, working with clients to provide estimates and engage in spectrum of care cases.

Services include preventative medicine as well as diagnostic illness/injury cases, reproductive studies, lameness studies, dentistry, surgeries, herd checks, and health paper exams for exhibition or sale. The West Side Pet Clinic provides high quality care at a lower price in a underserved neighborhood in urban Buffalo by focusing on basic pet care needs.  We establish the clinic ten years ago in a two exam room leased space. Five years ago we move into a new 2,200 sq ft space with 4 double entry exam rooms and circular client flow.  This has elevated client and patient experience and increased effectiveness.

Demand for care is very high which provides externs an opportunity to have a significant case and client interaction while being mentored by experience clinicians.  We have hosted many 4th year externs for 2-4 week periods and have a development plan that moves through a 4 step mentored program where they progress from following & observing to independently seeing clients and patients and requesting guidance as needed.   Our externs have found this to be rewarding and confidence building.  Many of our externs who are dedicated to Access to Care issues in today's vet industry also find this a very inspiring experience.
