The goal of the BRP Veterinary Externship Program is to support students as they gain professional experience in a practice setting. Under the supervision of experienced veterinarians, Externs will participate in direct client care and receive individualized coaching and mentorship. We have lots of opportunities all around OH, including surgery, dentistry, small mammal, avian, exotics & more!
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited DVM program (or equivalent)
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Must be able to lift and carry objects and animals up to 40 pounds
The opportunity to observe and participate in all areas of the practice, with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, including:
Patient exams, diagnosis, treatments, vaccinations, and records.
Laboratory procedures, including blood draws, submission, and interpretation.
Anesthesia induction, monitoring, and records.
Assisting in surgery, including being a scrubbed assistant.
Dental procedures, including digital dental radiography
Radiology procedures using digital radiography
Ultrasound imaging
Office operations including client communications, data entry, and accounting of transactions.
Working with small animals practitioners in room and in the surgery suites.

LIVS is home to a team of 180 caring professionals in a variety of disciplines including Cardiology, Dermatology, Integrative Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation, and Surgery. We have well-established clientele and a fully equipped ICU staffed 24/7/365. LIVS is a highly respected teaching facility and has maintained residency and internship training programs in a variety of disciplines. LIVS is committed to technological advancement and utilize some of the most progressive imaging modalities including G.E. Logitec ultrasound, Storz HD endoscopy system, Philips 3 Tesla MRI, Philips MX8000 multi-detector CT scanner, two digital radiography suites, and an in-house fluoroscopy suite to facilitate interventional procedures.

This elective experience is mainly to teach the students the in and outs of veterinary Med in a small animal general practice setting. Niles Veterinary Clinic is a modern, AAHA accredited, three veterinarian practice that provides high quality full-service care for dogs, cats and pocket pets. We are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care and client service. We believe that education of our doctors, staff, and clients is the key to creating individualized veterinary healthcare for our patients. Our goal is to touch on all of the following with the extern: General pet care, radiographs and reading them, ultrasound and reading them, diagnostics and treatment options, chemotherapy approaches, acupuncture and laser therapy, all aspects of surgery including anesthesia protocols, and anything else that might fit in during the time they are with us.
Day to day operations at a small animal general private practice
Shadowing and assisting 4 veterinarians and supporting staff in mixed animal general practice that also sees urgent care/emergency work.
Greenfield Veterinary Clinic is a two doctor practice in rural, south central, Ohio. Students will spend time heavily immersed in a hands-on experience within our practice. Whether it’s out on the farm or in the clinic, we offer students to do as much as they’d like and we can permit. Located just 1 hour south of Columbus, we service Highland, Ross, Fayette, Adams, Brown, Clinton, Scioto and Pike counties. Our small animal facility is a true rural practice, and we provide many services to our clients including surgery, send out bloodwork and preventive / annual care. Surgery days vary from two to three days a week. Our small animal side is open Saturday also from 8:30-11am. Our large animal side of things is variable depending on the season, heaviest in fall, winter and spring. We service the Union Stockyards in Hillsboro, OH, where we run a weekly sale. Feeder sales here range from monthly to weekly, as bred cow sales run monthly to bi-weekly. Students will be exposed to a variety of practices including pregnancy checks via ultrasound (hands-free probe also), fetal sexing and staging, castrations, vaccinations, herd health management, surgeries and emergencies. Equine, swine and small ruminant work make up a lesser part of our large animal practice. We offer limited small animals emergency services to clients and non-clients.

We are a privately owned company of three veterinary practices located in northwest PA and northeast OH. Our
one to two doctor small animal practices treat dogs and cats. On occasion, we will see a small ruminant, do a health
certificate for a fair animal or treat a bird or pocket pet. The student will be involved with wellness and medicine
cases, experience and perform surgical procedures and develop all aspects of client and staff communication skills.
The student will be exposed to the best business management practices in regard to daily revenues and expenses,
time management, utilizing modern technology, and learning how to appreciate the team that you work with.
