Animal Emergency of Gainesville is an overnight and weekend emergency hospital. The student will be exposed to all types of emergency presentations in the small animal patient.
The student will join in the daily work of the V.E.T. Net NGO. The organization is an educational NGO that seeks to improve the knowledge and skills of national veterinarians. As such, the primary goal will be an exchange of knowledge rather than a chance to perform many procedures. It is important to us to impart knowledge and skills that will be clinically useful here rather than teaching the way things are done in the USA, many of which cannot be practically applied in the local context and could potentially lead to discouragement of local veterinarians. We will seek to use the interest of the student to guide the specifics of how he/she will be involved, but the general format will likely include involvement in 2 main areas. One will spend some time at a small animal clinic run by the NGO. Here the student will work in a setting that is similar to rural practices in the USA, but it is actually one of (if not the most) advanced clinics in the country. The rest of the time will be spent working with an intern program comprised of recent graduates. The student will be able to interact and learn about the local culture from their peers here and will also take part in both preparing and listening to lectures as well as participation in hands on labs. Depending on what is needed/occurring, it is also possible that the student can participate in some large animal house calls as well.
2 weeks following chief veterinary officer of P&G discussing pet toxicology and doing a project
Small animal predominant practice seeing dogs and cats primarily with some exotic, wildlife and small ruminant cases.
Cases are anywhere from general medicine, surgery and dental to urgent care and emergency. The practice is the only hospital on an island so we have to deal with all kinds of cases, many requiring extensive stabilization prior to transfer or no transfer at all and intensive care depending on ability to travel.
Externs will be shadowing in appointments, in urgent care/ER or in surgery. They will be expected to help restrain or obtain samples if needed and take part in morning rounds.
GP small animal (k9/fel) established 2 doctor (1.75 FTE) practice offering well/preventive care, sick/injured, dentistry, soft tissue surgery and grooming. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of care and the operation of the hospital working with a competent, qualified staff in an open and friendly environment. Providing high quality care is a priority while also enjoying our work and time together.
Student will be assigned to the Medical Director (or senior veterinarian) for the 2-4 week externship. Housing and stipend of $250.00 per week will be provided.
It is vital that externs get experience in the following areas:
- Exam Room client communication
- performing physical exams with and without the doctor present. The client will need to be informed and we can have a sign on the door welcoming the 4th year vet student.
- creating diagnostic plans with the medical director
- technical skills (catheter placement, cystocentesis, venipuncture, intubation)
- minor surgery (wound repair, lacerations, small growth removals, closure of OVH/Netuer) under guidance of medical director
- spays and neuters (if possible with rescue group patients?) under guidance of medical director

Our mission at Montgomery Animal Hospital is to train and inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals. We know that the right team makes any stressful job easier, and our team is the best! We offer you real-world practical experience in our private AAHA-accredited small animal and exotic Cincinnati practice to prepare you to hit the ground running for your first associate position.
The experience will include: outpatient appointments ranging from wellness care to sick visits, occasional urgent care experience, dentistry, and general soft tissue surgery. You will shadow our experienced doctors and have the chance for hands-on patient treatment and the chance to lead client communication. The majority of our patients are dogs and cats, so you can seek out or avoid the birds, reptiles, and small mammals depending on your preference.
Our clientele is relatively affluent, which allows us to run most of the diagnostics we need to provide care for their pets. We also take a practical approach to our patient care, so our clients know that they can trust our recommendations for further workup to be completely necessary. We work closely with the local specialists to get our patients the best possible outcome. We love to teach, so we host tech students regularly during the school year and hire vet students for summer positions.
