The Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) Working Group (ASWG) of the CVM-OSU oversees the Infection Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP), and Diagnostic Stewardship efforts of the Veterinary Medical Center. The ASWG has also created the BuckeyeASP, which extends efforts on AS into private practice. Members of the ASWG include experts in veterinary epidemiology, pharmacologists, clinicians, and microbiologists. This elective rotation is a learning hands-on experience accomplished in a period of 2 – 4 weeks and offered to veterinary students that have an interest in infectious diseases with a focus on infection control, diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship. Members of the ASWG will contribute with the experience. The student will follow cases that are processed by the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory having the opportunity to review cases (clinical history, selection of appropriate tests, result interpretation, and antimicrobial selection). In addition, the student will participate in activities of the ASWG and infection control efforts including a mini project on infection control. It is expected that the student will also attend microbiology rounds. It is expected the student will present the assigned case or mini project at the end of the rotation.
Students will be performing physical exams on tractable animals, will be able to practice venipuncture on awake and anesthetized animals. They will learn anesthetic monitoring, intubation and prepping skills. They will perform sterilization surgeries under the supervision of a veterinarian.
The student will have hands on experience in the real world of small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery working with clients and staff on preventative medical, internal medical, hospitalized, soft tissue surgical and dental cases. Busy east side Columbus Ohio practice that is well equipped.
Our shelter has a robust surgical and medical program - we do routine S/N surgeries plus almost any other soft tissue surgery necessary, plus a few orthopedic procedures - mainly FHOs and amputations. Additionally we have dental xray and two dental stations. We have digital xray and a two-table surgery suite.
We also opened a public clinic in a separate location in 2022 that serves 5 zip codes in Toledo, providing access to care in an urban setting.
Mission has been training future veterinarians in the practice of spectrum of care medicine as an external primary care rotation for senior students from the University of Minnesota since 2020. We know that by naming, identifying and teaching the spectrum of care approach to veterinary medicine, we can influence the next generation of veterinarians to practice in a community-centric way that increases the accessibility of veterinary medicine on a broad scale. To that end, Mission is offering a 2 week senior veterinary student externship to veterinary students from any institution starting in May 2023.
The enhanced program will include:
- Didactic instruction, including discussions and literature review, on increasing access to veterinary care, with an emphasis on social justice as the foundational framework, along with communication skills, clinical skills and case management in a resource limited environment
-
Hands-on learning opportunities:
- primary case management, overseen by a veterinarian dedicated to instruction, for urgent care cases and preventative medicine (specific opportunities are dependent on our daily schedule, but we estimate students will oversee approximately 12-18 urgent care cases and 18-24 wellness cases during the rotation)
- high-volume/high-quality spay/neuter technique (primary surgeon for minimum of 2-4 spay/neuter surgeries)
- clinical skills with an emphasis on those important to the practice of spectrum of care medicine such as evidence-based outpatient treatment protocols and emergency procedures (possible examples include: outpatient parvovirus protocol, urethral obstruction management, feeding tube placement)
- Experiential learning in a multi-service practice based on current case availability elective general surgery, emergency surgery, dentistry and DAVCS/specialty surgery where specific student involvement fluctuates based on case availability
Mission’s Veterinary Student Training Program will supplement the veterinary education received at a tertiary academic institution with valuable, practical knowledge in a private practice setting that is uniquely qualified to provide training in a spectrum of care to future veterinarians.
We are a multi-doctor and (soon to be) AAHA accredited small animal and exotics practice located in El Paso, Texas. Our goal is to practice excellent medicine and provide learning opportunities through the use of up to date technology, practicing current standards of care, and having very well training and knowledgeable team members. Dr. Dashley will also provide one to two cadaver wet labs throughout the rotation to help students practice common techniques, such as e-tube placement, enucleations, tail amputations, dental extractions, etc.
TBVS offers externships in all specialty services and emergency medicine. We welcome any length of rotation (minimum 2 weeks). Students can rotate in a single discipline or combine multiple areas during one experience. The degree of hands-on involvement varies by service and student's stage of education.
The externship program, at Arbor View Animal Hospital, focuses on providing our externs with large amounts of hands-on practical experience working directly with our veterinarians and their patients. We customize our externship experience towards areas our externs want to further their skill sets. Our veterinarians know there is a lot to learn in vet school and applying this knowledge in the real world can be a daunting task. We believe veterinary students who complete an externship with us will have more hands-on experience and will be better prepared for life after they graduate. Many veterinary school programs lack a high caseload in exotic pet medicine, which is something Arbor View Animal Hospital excels at. We have 8 veterinarians on staff dedicated and passionate about exotic pet medicine. In fact, more than 38% of our clients are exotic pets (not including wildlife cases) and the remainder are canine and feline clients. Our clinic also treats and rehabilitates local injured wildlife. Our externs are responsible for triaging, developing treatment plans, and performing diagnostics on our wildlife patients, under the guidance of our veterinarians.
On average, Arbor View has between 300-500 wildlife cases brought to our clinic each year. We also have a working relationship with a local wildlife rehabilitation center, which works with us when medical care is needed for their wildlife cases. Arbor View also provides medical care for their education ambassador raptors and mammals. As we mentioned before, all of our doctors are very knowledgeable about exotic/wildlife medicine and are eager to teach others about their passion for exotic pet medicine.
Our clinic is also the only clinic in Northwest Indiana that sees exotic pet emergencies after hours, which if you’re interested in ER medicine this is a great way to get additional experience with exotic pet emergencies. Participation with after-hour exotic pet emergencies is not required for our externship but it is available if you’re interested.
What an extern can expect:

We are a five-doctor, small animal veterinary hospital located in downtown Miami. Our cases include opthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, clinical pathology, dentistry, surgery (dental and soft tissue) and internal medicine workups as well as preventative/wellness medicine. Students will gain practical experience by working along-side our veterinarians shadowing them in exam rooms, working up cases with them, reviewing and documenting electronic medical records, interpreting diagnostics, scrubbing in for surgeries and participating in daily rounds.
