Description of Elective Experience:

We are a progressive, fast paced, 4 doctor small animal practice with emphasis on surgery and medicine cases.  We have a growing, thriving urgent care practice Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12pm - 10pm.  However, since opening urgent care we do see cases throughout the week that are fit into our normally scheduled GP appointments.  We pride ourselves on providing a learning environment for both doctors and support staff.  We provide orthopedic, soft tissue, urogenital, and general surgery options for our patients and their families.

The student will be assigned to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), Outbreak Prevention and Response Branch, Zoootic Disease Section while enrolled in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP). The EEP is an eight-week elective rotation to introduce medical and veterinary students to applied epidemiology and public health. Students learn by gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from subject matter experts in public health. 

Assignments may involve:

  • conducting surveillance of a disease, injury, or other health condition,
  • collecting and analyzing health data to identify new risk factors for disease,
  • evaluating the effectiveness of program prevention strategies to help inform future implementation,
  • assisting CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers and other public health professionals to investigate an outbreak, and
  • contributing to scientific reports, publications, guidelines, and communication materials.

Our hospital is open 24/7 and offer services for canine, feline and exotic species. The entire hospital is 14,000 sqft with a 3,000sqft Intensive Care Unit, Exotic Ward, CT, ultrasound, 11 exam rooms, Isolation Ward, Dental Suite, Double Surgery Suites and more. We have over 20 DVMs including specialists and over 130 total staff members. We welcome clinical year veterinary students for rotations that can be customizable due to our complex and varied caseload. Rotations can include ER, ICU, Exotics, Imaging, Surgery, Dentistry and GP. All species are seen in all of those areas so exposure to exotic species happens in each department. 

Extern students will be paired with DVMs and have hands on learning experiences with Exotics in Surgery, ICU, ER, GP and Imaging. Our externs continually rate our hospital as one of their favorite externship sites and they feel that the learning opportunities far exceed their expectations.

The student will be immersed directly into our culture and with our clients & patients at Town & Country Animal Clinic. He/she will receive hands-on, real-world training. Technical skills and interpersonal skills will be put to the test in order for students to learn and gain confidence moving forward in their careers as DVMs. The student will be directly supervised by our Veterinarian.  Under supervision, the student will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Gathering & interpreting patient history
  • Performing physical exams
  • Wellness, ill & emergency patient management
  • Short term & Long-term medical case management
  • Hands-on use of diagnostic tools
  • Guided interpretation of results
  • Surgical preparation/monitoring & scrub into surgery
  • Proper communication through follow-up calls with clients
  • Telephone communication and scheduling

Sentinel Veterinary Specialists and Emergency is a privately owned 24/7 emergency and specialty (critical care, anesthesia, and surgery) hospital in Missoula, MT. 

  • Students will work with the emergency team in all aspects of care including: rounds, client communication, physical exams, diagnostics, treatment plans, hospitalized case management, surgeries, and other emergency procedures.
  • Students will have the option to spend time with the specialty services if desired.
  • We serve a large clientele of dog and cat owners spanning western Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington.  Providing a spectrum of care is an essential part of our practice.

Missoula is located in western Montana.  We are a small university town surrounded by mountains, rivers, hiking, fishing, skiing/snowboarding, and pretty much any outdoor activity you can imagine.  Caroline Buisson, DVM (ER Medical Director) is a 2005 alum of OSU CVM and is excited to invite fellow Buckeyes to our practice for externship.

In general, students will have the opportunity to get significant palpation/ultrasound experience, as well as medical/surgical experience. Those interested in advanced reproductive services will find plenty of opportunity to ride with our Genetic Services team. Other areas in which students can get experience include records analysis, calf lung ultrasound, employee training, and team meetings/consultation. Students also participate in our whole-team breakfast meetings on Wednesday mornings, where we discuss cases, ask questions, and catch up.

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit biomedical research institution with a mission to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. The Jackson Laboratory provides more than 13,000 strains of mouse model domestically and internationally and  the home of the Mouse Genome Informatics database, and an international hub for scientific courses, conferences, training and education.

Through this externship, externs will be trained on basic mouse handling and technique provided by our trainers, work closely with the clinical veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians to treat mice, attend meetings with the veterinarians (vet meeting, project meeting, IACUC meeting, etc.), and interact with the different departments at JAX such as surgical service, animal welfare committee, research department, biosecurity team, pathology service, and etc.

AAHA accredited small animal general practice with limited exotics (pocket pets, reptiles) with focus on fear free. Students are given a mentor/coach DVM that will be with them on scheduled shifts to help keep students gain knowledge that they need. They will meet with coach DVM weekly, if not daily, to go over cases, discuss concerns, ask questions, and review any topic rounds given.
