Orthopedic Consults and Surgery
Dental Procedures
General Surgery and Appointments
The PG Diploma in Animal Osteopathy program has been developed for veterinarians (DVM/VMD) and veterinary students interested in expanding their practice to include osteopathic treatment for equine and canine patients.
We are a busy GP and specialty hospital. We have a boarded surgeon and cardiologist which
compliment a team of seasoned general practitioners. We do a lot of abdominal ultrasonography on a
state of the art GE ultrasound machine. Externs will have exposure to advanced surgery, cardiology,
abdominal ultrasonography, and solid GP diagnostic and interventional skills. We are located in a lively
Philadelphia suburb where clients take exemplary care of their pets and invest the resources into high
end care.
DVM Student will be expected to follow the doctor and team around, immersing themselves in the case, both examining and learning as they discuss the cases with the doctors and formulate plans - in rooms with clients, drop offs and surgery/dental procedures. Based on student confidence and skill level, they may have opportunity to participate in surgery or extractions along with the DVM. Student will never be left alone, but will be expected to participate and help the team during the internship.
Unique institution, as student would be immersed in the two dairy facilities and two calf ranches that Holsum operates. Holsum employs three veterinarians, student would predominantly interact with Dr Stollen (the staff veterinarian), the other vets are responsible for primarily managerial projects.
Veterinarians work on farm with equipment at each site as needed, so a non-traditional dairy production medicine externship. The student would participate in herd checks for the dairies (Mon 5:30AM-NOON) and heifer checks (Tues 6:45-10AM), the rest of the week would be divided up into time spent working with herdsmen in the hospital and maternity areas, opportunities to treat calves, observe hoof trimmers, etc. based on student interest. Students are included on any emergency work or surgical procedures. In the past this has included obstetrical cases (with fetotomy/caesarians as needed), displaced abomasum correction (both roll and toggle and surgical management), umbilical hernia resection, fracture management, enucleation and laceration repairs. Because we are a working dairy there is variability in the presentation of said procedures.
We regularly have team meetings on the dairies and students are welcome to come and observe our interactions with herdsmen, milkers, and upper management staff. We have bilingual translation for training, feedback and meetings. Any students looking to practice Spanish are especially welcome and employees are happy to share their cultural experience.
This externship takes place in the southern part of Ecuador, a city called Loja. This is one of the top Universities and one of the few that offer Veterinary Medicine throughout the whole country. The faculty, staff and students are great with hands on learning and teaching, plus a wide variety of animal practice (small, large and exotics). UNL has their own farm in the northern parts of the city, where you will see first hand production of milk, yogurt, cheese, marmalades, ham and sausages, an experience that is once in a lifetime. In the humble teaching hospital you will learn to be efficient and effective with resources around you. Lastly, the Labs are open to those interested in pathology, histopathology and cytology; with diseases and slides only seen in remote parts of the world. Alongside the amazing experience and education you get rich ecuadorian culture and cuisine throughout the year. Once your days ends at the University, your life in the city begins.
The student will be immersed in a general practice environment, collaborating closely with a licensed veterinarian. Responsibilities will encompass taking patient histories, conducting examinations, and formulating comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans. Additionally, the student will take the lead in communicating with clients regarding admitted patients. Depending on demonstrated capability, the student may have the opportunity to perform minor elective surgeries under supervision. Feedback will be provided on a daily basis, offering recommendations and commendations to enhance performance and learning.
Externs participate in morning Clinic Rounds, review our Radiographic Teaching file of approximately 200 cases (thoracic, abdominal, skeletal, and special studies), learn basic abdominal ultrasound, participate in weekly Journal club and Radiographic Case of the Week, as well as review/observe radiographic, ultrasonographic, and CT cases within out hospital.
We are a mixed animal practice that provides ambulatory large animal medicine, surgery, and herd health. We can also provide small animal experiences. In the past, we have even allowed students to perform spay/neuter procedures if time allows.
The elective experience at Wishing Well Veterinary Hospital will include a day filled with the opportunity to learn about the "typical" day at a general small animal hospital, which the student will quickly learn is never "typical". We are a busy two doctor practice located in Wayne,NJ, located approximately thirty minutes from New York City in northern New Jersey. Wishing Well is an exclusively small animal practice seeing only dogs and cats. Our schedule allows us to see animals of every life stage, providing service from wellness exams and vaccines and routine blood tests to working up sick animals, and ultimately offering euthanasia if warranted. Surgery is performed routinely three days a week and on an emergency basis if needed. The candidate will have the opportunity to scrub in and assist if desired. Wishing Wel Veterinary Hospital is also proud to care for the working canine force of the Passaic County Sheriff's Department. We love the opportunity to teach and to learn from our students!
