The student will assist and participate in the case loads of all three doctors.  This is a "hands on" opportunity.  Our State Board has approved veterinary students to participate to the level of Registered Vet Techs provided they are under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian.  Vet students are expected to participate in medical discussions and decision making along with the professional staff.  Students are given assignments, responsibilites and are held accountable.  Client communication is part of their job.

Full service animal hospital with general surgery, dentistry, ICU, Internal Medicine, Boarding.  Candidate will be involved in all aspects of the hospital.  Exposure will include behind the scenes day to day of running the hospital.

Northwest Mobile Vet is a mixed animal practice located near Portland, Oregon with a focus on backyard/hobby farms. Llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep, pet pigs, cattle, and chickens comprise the majority of our workload. We perform everything from routine preventative care to complicated field surgery.

Externs will shadow and observe our ER doctors, help out doctors & staff, scrub into surgery, assist with medical records, and communicate with clients.

Externs may see bite wounds, choking or respiratory distress, toxin ingestion, shock, DKA, heat stroke, reproductive emergencies, seizures, pancreatitis, and hemoabdomen.

Small animal predominate general practice. This experience would include exposure to genral veterinary medicine practices like vaccine schedules, and general surgeries. Exposure to business managment practices for interested students.

The Animalife Veterinary centers are a three hospital group in Naples Florida started by Dr. Randy Eisel in 1996 and this year acquired by NVA as majority owner. The practices are all small animal, primarily dogs and cats with some exotic animal medicine including small mammals, reptiles and birds. Dr. Eisel is the consulting veterinarian for a large reptile breeding facility in Naples and for a wolf rescue facility that also houses coyotes, big cats, raccoons and foxes along with a very large number of rescued wolves and wolf hybrids. Along with our regular caseload of dogs and cats the extern will have the opportunity to visit multiple facilities and learn handling, behavior and treatment of numerous species of exotic animals. However, the majority of the externs experience will be in the care and treatment of dogs and cats in our three hospitals. The extern will have the opportunity to work with our staff of doctors learning surgical techniques, internal medicine, dental procedures, labwork interpretation, physical examination skills, client communication, inpatient and outpatient hospital care. The elective experience will focus on traditional mentorship with hands on instruction in all aspects of veterinary care under the direct supervision of highly qualified and experienced veterinary practitioners.

Opportunity to shadow, participate, and engage in appointments and procedures in a corporate general practice setting. Students will work with staff in assessing when and how to treat, and when referral is deemed appropriate. We see a fairly equal amount of wellness and sick visits so we hope to ensure students are confident in participating in both by the end of their time here.

Externs are exposed to the flow of cases through our emergency service along with tertiary level inpatient management.  They will learn about triage, pain management, and medical management of heart failure, gastrointestinal distress, and organ dysfunction.

IIAD offers 4 externships to veterinary students throughout each fiscal year, 2 extern positions in the spring and 2 extern positions in the fall. During an externship with IIAD, students will spend up to 4 weeks observing and assisting with the implementation of IIAD’s programs covering animal health risk prevention and risk response within the One Heath sector. Externs will gain insight and experience in the administration and application of U.S. and international working partnerships amongst government agencies and organizations IIAD collaborates with. Externs will also make valuable connections and working relationships with epidemiologists, veterinarians, public health staff, and other professionals within the Institute, Texas A&M AgriLife, and other external entities.
