  1. Students will be travelling to off-site farms through the state of Iowa to observe commercial poultry sites. 
  2. Learning Competencies: 
    At the completion of this course students are expected to be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Basic bird handling and husbandry
    • Organization of the poultry industry and understanding of each management system
    • Antemortem and post-mortem examination, interpreting records, biosecurity plans, immunization programs, infectious and non-infectious diseases, and moderate management practices to prevent poultry diseases are addressed.

Advanced Small Animal Clinical Nutrition is a three week rotation with an emphasis on small animal nutrition and providing information that will be useful to students going into small animal or mixed animal practice or advanced training such as internships and residencies. The rotation consists of didactic lectures, labs, a field trip to tour a pet food manufacturing plant (COVID currently prevents us from touring plant), journal article reviews and a secret shopper activity in the field to provide students with insight into what their future clients are hearing about pet nutrition. The students will also be provided the tools needed to be able to address a lot of the misperceptions and misinformation clients read about pet nutrition on the internet, through marketing or social media sites. Some of the topics and activities covered during the rotation include corn, by-products and grains, cats and carbohydrates, raw diets, prebiotics and probiotics, the use of nutrition to maintain health and manage diseases, an naso-esophageal tube placement lab, a body condition scoring and muscle condition scoring lab, and pet food wet lab, as well as application of information through case-based learning.

Three days of the week, the student will be observing and assisting the mobile ultrasound service, for a total of approximately 24 hours per week. This will include discussing cases (with radiologist and referring veterinarian), helping to prepare patients, and performing abdominal ultrasounds. Two days of the week, the student will be engaged in assigned readings and case reviews.

first day will see how clinic runs,  2nd day will start taking histories, talking with clients, figuring treatment plan with help from the DVM, Will be able to work up case and perform most/all treatment. Will set up surgeries during the 2 weeks for the student with assistance. Can set up some horse dental/vaccinations/xrays/procedures.

The student will shadow and assist ambulatory racetrack veterinarian during the Saratoga race meet in Saratoga Springs, NY. 

In racing thoroughbreds: lameness evaluation and diagnostics, upper airway evaluation, respiratory disease/infection management,  emergency procedures and management,  assist in minor surgical procedures. Management of cases including referral to hospitals or clinics.

The veterinary Student will travel with the veterinarians in our dairy practice and participate in individual cow medicine, dairy production medicine and client management.

The veterinary student will gain experience in the daily life of a small animal general practice veterinarian. The student will shadow and have opportunities to take the role of the veterinarian under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The student's role can include receiving histories from clients and performing general physical exams. With the attending clinician, they will formulate problem lists and diagnostic plans, and based on the results, they will formulate a treatment protocol. The student will be performing and reading diagnostic tests with a veterinarian. The student under the supervision of a veterinarian can observe and assist in surgical procedures like spays, neuters, foreign body removals, mass removals, etc.

The student will be present in the discussions of hospitalized cases in the hospital and will help the technician in this area. Additionally, you will assist the doctor in the examination and surgery rooms.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has a veterinary government relations externship opportunity. The externships are two weeks in length and take place in Washington, D.C. (unless noted otherwise). The goal of the program is to expose students to the pivotal role of veterinarians in public policy, advocacy, legislation and regulation at the national level.
