General practice with small animals.
SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL WITH THREE ON STAFF VETERINARIANS PRACTICING GENERAL MEDICINE. STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPURTUNITIES TO AID IN EXAMINATION, HISTORY, DIAGNOSTICS, AND SOME PROCEDURES. A TYPICAL DAY INCLUDES MULTIPLE SURGERIES IN THE MORNING RANGING FROM SPAY, NEUTERS, DENTALS, GROWTHS, EXPLORATORIES, C-SECTIONS, AND OCCASSIONAL ORTHOPEDIC SURGERIES, FOLLOWED BY AN AFTERNOON FULL OF APPOINTMENTS. EMERGENCIES ARE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND SEEN AS NEEDED.
The Atlanta-Fulton County Zoo, Inc. (Zoo Atlanta) offers an opportunity for a non-paid veterinary student externship, whenever these arrangements do not conflict with other official educational programs.
Overview:
This program is intended for senior veterinary students to become more familiar with the practice of zoo veterinary medicine. Preventive medicine, clinical judgment, record keeping, proficiency with specialized equipment, and husbandry of a wide variety of species will be emphasized. Students will observe and participate in rounds, clinical procedures, quarantine, and necropsy depending on the needs of the collection at the time. An appreciation of the zoo veterinarian's role in the community, and knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to a zoo animal practice, should also be gained from this experience.
The student will be expected to gradually develop confidence and knowledge in clinical and handling techniques, to demonstrate the proper use of equipment in routine procedures, and to utilize the available literature in exotic animal medicine.
The zoo veterinarians and licensed technicians supervise the program. Volunteers serve up to 40 hours weekly.
Qualifications:
The program is designed for veterinary students who have completed their third year (or equivalent in foreign programs) and is intended for them to become more familiar with the practice of zoo veterinary medicine. The minimum externship period required is 6 weeks. Students may be required to complete a project of their choosing during the 6 week period.
This is a volunteer program; no stipend is available. We will try to assist the extern in finding housing in the local area, but this is not guaranteed.
TB test/Vaccinations: TB test current within the year. Rabies vaccination recommended. All other vaccinations as recommended by your physician.

Students in the Banfield Externship Program will:
• Gain real-world experience through exposure to full-service hospitals and techniques under the watchful care of a personal mentor.
• Develop medical and surgical skills under the care of a licensed mentor as well as client communication skills.
• Learn to practice veterinary medicine within a well-equipped hospital.
• Perfect physical examination skills using Banfield's proprietary computer-guided exam minimum standards.
• Learn about the business of veterinary practice through exposure to Banfield's marketing and leadership initiatives.
Externship at thriving small animal practice in Central Indiana. Practice is privately owned and consists of three conveniently located clinics.
All three clinics are located along a 20 mile span of Highway 67 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The clinics share many similarities at the operational level, but serve diverse client bases. We have learned that each client base requires a different approach in order to establish an effective and trusting veterinarian-client bond.
- Our Centeron clinic, located on a horse farm, serves a rural and hobby farming clientele.
- Our Mooresville clinic, located in the town of Mooresville/Camby, serves a suburban clientele.
- Our Holt Road clinic, located in Indianapolis, serves an inner city & urban population.
Our externship program is designed to accommodate students for a 2, 4, 6 or 8 week block. Each student will be assigned to one supervising veterinarian, however if the college’s program permits students may be given the opportunity to work with different vets within our practice so they can experience different techniques and approaches to medicine. This will allow them to learn, firsthand, that while each doctor approaches a case differently, the underlying principles learned in veterinary school are the foundation in the development of successful diagnostic and treatment protocol.
Students will have opportunity to assist in routine and complex cases, by examinig patients and then going over diagnosis and treatment options with their supervising veterinarian. Due to the relationship we have with the local animal shelter students will be able to perform a number of supervised spays/neuters. While we do not offer after hours emergency care we can also set up shadowing at the Airport Animal Emergi-Center.
Dairy Cows
Bovine Embryo Transfer - in vivo and in vitro
Student will accompany veterinarians on dairy or beef visits. Experience will consist of: bovine palpation/pregnancy diagnosis, brucellosis vaccination, DA surgery, records analysis and consulting, employee training, OB assist, BSE exams, embryo transfer, ect.
The objectives of this rotation are:
- To educate the senior veterinary student through exposure to the requisite veterinary care for top athletes in 8 sports: dressage, eventing, show jumping, driving, endurance, reining, vaulting and para equestrian. This will be achieved through assisting the veterinarians at the competition as well as presentations to the students covering the physical demands of each sport, review of the most common injuries, overview of the rules of each discipline of competition, biosecurity and triage of athletic injuries.
- To provide motivated, talented veterinary students to work as assistants to the veterinarians at the competition. The veterinarians will provide mentorship to the students.
- To gain clinical experience as part of the veterinary hospital team on site that will provide the medical and surgical needs of the horses at the competition.
