Farbest Foods is one of the largest turkey companies in the United States and a respected leader in the industry. We supply raw, fresh and frozen turkey products to brand-name value added further processors around the world.

Our total live production eclipses 600 million live pounds annually—all under closely monitored conditions. Farbest Foods turkeys are grown under stringent conditions, and our operations are approved by the National Poultry Improvement Plan—an agency dedicated to disease-free hatchery products through rigorous diagnostic technology. In addition, all of our Farbest flocks are tested for Avian Influenza before processing.

We have two processing plants, one located in Huntingburg, Indiana and the other in Vincennes, Indiana. Both feature the latest developments in automation, maintain the highest quality standards, and are recognized world-wide for their efficiencies of operation. In fact, our facility in Vincennes is the most advanced automated processing plant in the industry.

Description of Elective Experience:

4th year students are able to act as the primary veterinarian on all cases that are of low to moderate difficulty. They go in rooms alone, get their histories, perform physical exams, and communicate with clients. They then go through PE findings with the mentoring doctor and discuss their diagnostic plan. The mentoring doctor makes any necessary changes, and the diagnostics are carried out by the technicians. The student discusses potential differentials and how they would like to amend or change their plan. The mentoring doctor advises and makes any necessary changes and the treatment plan is carried out.

Prices Creek Vet Service is small but a rapidly growing rural two (should be 3) doctor practice in Lewisburg, Ohio. We are a mixed dog/cat (60%) and equine (40%) practice, with a smattering of small ruminants (1%) to keep things interesting.

Our goal is to practice high quality medicine with an emphasis on low stress handling, client education, and customer service, while maintaining a fun workplace. We have a full service small animal clinic (with an expansion in the near future) with a surgery suite, digital radiology, ultrasound, ultrasonic dental machine, and in-house lab machines. We have 4 RVTs, one RVT in training, and one Vet Assistant on staff who are all passionate about low stress handling and making meaningful relationships with our patients and clients. Most large animal appointments are seen in the field, but we do have a small haul in facility with stocks, which is nice in inclement weather. There are 2 fully stocked vet trucks, 2 varieties of power floats, portable ultrasound, and portable digital radiology available for farm calls.

Externs will work one-on-one with our veterinarians in the office and on farm calls throughout the week and will go along on after hours emergency farm calls.   Externs will assist with appointments and diagnostic/treatment plans, and when deemed appropriate, may be given primary case responsibility with an attending veterinarian.  Students will be allowed to assist in surgeries as appropriate.

Our current staff includes 3 DVMs, 3 RVTs, 6 VAs, and 4 CSRs. Typically, we have 2 DVMs per day, and some days one.

We do not have any specialists on staff. Most of our surgeries are routine, with no orthopedic procedures, but we do perform a lot of dentistry. A typical day involves 1 DVM in surgery from 8 AM to 1 PM while the other DVM handles appointments, then both DVMs take appointments in the afternoon. DVMs rotate surgery days.

Our hours of operation are 8 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday, and 8 AM to 12 PM on Saturday. We are closed on Sunday.
