We are a 20,000 square foot, general, exotics, surgical and emergency hospital with a high case load. The past year we had a total of over 58,000 patient visits. We have a staff of 28 veterinarians and 2 interns. Our externship provides the opportunity to experience all aspects of the hospital, always under the direct supervision of a veterinarian.
Private Practice (clinic and ambulatory)
Sports Medicine, Lameness, Exercise Physiology, Rehabilitation, Chiropractics, Dentistry, Medicine, Reproduction, Podiatry, Surgery
Student will have a varied clinical experience. We are an accreditied AAHA small animal hospital since 1997, with 5 DVM's. We do many types of surgery and most procedures are done with laser. We offer abdominal US as well as echo. We have digital radiography both for general diagnostics and dental. The student will not only shadow our doctors but will be given the opportunity to perform some routine surgery, examine, diagnose and devise treatment plans with our clinicians . We see some exotics if they are interested in that as well. We all enjoy teaching and learning and generally attend several seminars each year. I have had several intense Ultrasound courses in abdominal and cardiac imaging. We have high quality Storz endoscope and one of our doctors has had extensive training with that. So the student would be exposed to a wide variety of learning with hands on experience.
Externship with a private practice veterinary ophthalmology service
Externs are expected to help the interns in all of their duties. This includes helping with treatments during business hours as well as after-hours. Externs will assist with exams, lameness exams, taking radiographs, surgery and anesthesia. They will also assist with keeping exam rooms clean, stocking exam rooms and trucks, laundry, running lab work, cleaning surgery and insuring the library is clean and neat. Externs will also go on farm calls. If the extern has a particular area of interest (i.e. lameness, surgery, reproduction), they should make it clear to us so we can assist you in getting exposure to these areas of veterinary medicine.
It is important that the extern makes it clear to us their level of equine experience. Horses are large powerful animals and can be dangerous. We do not want to put you into a situation in which you do not feel comfortable. If at any time, you are asked to do something in which you do not feel comfortable, please make us aware. It is also important that externs do not treat a horse unless they are asked to treat a horse.
