City Way Animal Clinics is a small group of four veterinary practices in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. We focus on outstanding Patient Care, dedication to Client Communication and Education, building phenomenal teams, being a part of our incredible community and working to ensure a great work life balance for our team members.
There are two office locations- a small animal office in Mount Holly, NJ and a large animal facility a mile up the road in Eastampton, NJ. A third location is opening in Tuckerton, NJ in the Fall of 2019. We see a highly varied multi-species caseload with about 60% small animal and 40% large animal/equine. The vast majority of our large animal caseload is pet/backyard farm livestock vs. production animals. Students are invited to shadow with large and small animal appointments, round on cases with the veterinarians, may be asked to assist in surgery, and have some opportunities to work with our contract shelter. We try to cater a students experience to their individual interest.
We are a 12 doctor practice and try to offer a variety of learning opportunities tailored to individual desires. We typically have students spend their mornings in surgery and afternoons in wellness and sick patient visits. Additionally, students may accompany us on a visit to one of the rescues we work with, or opt to take a weekday off and see urgent care cases on Saturday or Sunday.
Our externship experience is designed to offer you clinical experience outside of the classroom walls. Our externships range from two to eight weeks in length; however, most students spend two weeks at our practice.
Externs experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of your mentor doctor, you will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop your client communication skills, polish your technical skills and produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice.
Fourth year clinical rotation in Avian, Zoological and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery with 7 veterinarians (one board certified in ABVP Avian and ABVP Exotic Companion Mammal; one in ABVP Avian; two in ACZM; two Residents in a Combined ABVP Avian and Exotic Companion Mammal residency; one Intern in a Combined Zoo animal/ Small Animal program.) We have one of the busiest clinical university practices, seeing over 3000 cases per year of both wildlife and owned companion exotic animals. Nick fully participated in all aspects of animal care including anesthesia, surgery and medicine.
The student will perform comprehensive physical exams and observe surgeries. She will practice technical skills including blood draws, use of diagnostic tools, anesthesia monitoring, and radiography (including dental radiography).
Student will be exposed to all areas of beef cattle practice. Reproductive ultrasounding will be one area of emphasis this time of year. Student can also expect to be involved in calf preconditioning, foot care, sick animals, injuries, and salebarn inspection and services. We also do all the basic small animal, small ruminant and equine medicine and surgery. The student can expect plenty of hands on experience depending on their enthusiasm and level of competency.
The goal of the externship is to provide students with a full understanding of the internship offered and to further explore a career in performance horse medicine, referral practice, and general practice. Externs will be included in the daily routine of all veterinarians. Externs are also expected to be available evenings and weekends during their stay. Depending on the time of year the work load varies from few hospitalized cases to a full ICU!
