General Practice DVM seeing appointments 3 days, with a Surgery DVM 5 days, with an Urgent Care DVM seeing appointments 2 days.
Student will participate in gross necropsy and histopathology of laboratory animals submitted to the Pathology Service, Division of Veterinary Resources under the direct supervision of board certified staff veterinary pathologists.
Student will participate in weekly histopathology slide conferences.
The VCA WLA Rotating Externship is set up so that you will rotate through multiple different services, attend patient rounds, attend didactic rounds, and interact with current house officers and senior clinicians. The services available for direct rotations include: Emergency, Critical Care, Neurology, Oncology, ZooMed, Dentistry, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and direct time with our on-site social worker (LCSW), current interns, and residents.

Day to day small animal practice procedures from history taking , SOAP creation, scheduleing visits, restraining patients, blood drawing and sample prep. Surgery prep and observing surgical procedures, Recovery of post surgical patients. Suture material / suture patterns if time allows.
We are a full-service small animal practice. Our goal is to offer and intense and informative clinical to each extern we come in contact with. Arrowhead Ranch Animal Hospital offers the extern the opportunity to work with 3 Onsite Practice Owners during the externship. The extern would be exposed to the philosophy of practicing medicine, client service expectations and methodology. The day to day schedule will mirror what they will see in a small animal practice. Surgeries and dentals in the morning, and visiting rooms in the afternoon. We would like to immerse the extern in every phase of the business. What charts look like; How to engage with a client; Shadowing surgical procedures; Building relationships and rapport with staff.

We have laprascopic surgery, in-house lab equipment, ultrasound, have digital dental xrays and are very advanced in dentistry. We perform a variety of surgeries including laparscopic spays, abdominal exploratories, gastrotomies, cystotomies, enterotomies, vulvoplasties, lump removals, and oral surgery.

Two week clinical rotation in swine production medicine, emerging diseases, management, and pharmacology. Students will be assigned to take the lead in investigating field based client cases with supervision of the instructors. Development of critical thinking skills that will allow students to apply concepts of herd management, production analysis, economic analysis, and disease prevention in addressing client cases. Variable amounts of travel to farm sites will be required.
This is a practical course in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in small animals. Learning is focused on oncology patients in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
PetWOW is a small animal practice which combines traditional stationary practices with a fleet of mobile vehicles that serve the Greater Cincinnati Area. In business for nearly 50 years, PetWOW’s externship program focuses on the application of veterinary medical theory to real life situations and patients. Externs will be asked to shadow several of PetWOW’s experienced doctoral staff and assist them with their cases throughout the day. We average 15 surgeries a day and 30-50 outpatient appointments, so externs will have the opportunity to observe and assist with a plethora of cases. We have built our reputation around extraordinary care for our clients and patients, so a passion for serving people and their pets is a must!
