Food animal, predominantly dairy cattle medicine and surgery - Entirely ambulatory
The student will be actively involved on the day to day work of a swine production medicine veterinarian. He/She will be with the staff veterinarian overseeing the sow units and following those pigs the entire way to market weight visiting nurseries and finishers. They will be exposed to interactions with contract growers, sow unit staff, and production team members, to better help their communication and problem solving skills. Many times issues in food animal production medicine is management based and we will work through problems of nutrition and ventilation and how this greatly impacts swine health. Vaccination protocols are a large focus area and we must review these often for the best health program. Due to the new FDA guidelines around antibiotic usage he/she will be involved in reviewing records on how this affects the farm and alternatives to help decrease usage.

Visiting students will have the same responsibilities as our senior students: primary patient care, working with clients, treatments, on call, medical records, etc.
Rotations through ER, GP, IM, SX
VCA ASEC offers student externships in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, and emergency/critical care. These rotations allow students to shadow board-certified specialists and experienced emergency clinicians in their given departments, attend and participate in daily rounds, and ask questions.
Student will perform physical examinations, observe in surgical procedures and intrepret body and dental radiographs. The student will also intrepret bloodwork, and will do a clinical workup of cases that present to the hospital. The student can work refining ultrasound skills, venipuncture and may have the opportunity to perform minimal surgical procedures.
Student will be supervised by a licensed veterinarian throughout the day.
Students who are chosen to participate in an elective block at our practice will be exposed to a high quality small animal practice in a rural, island setting. Senior veterinary students will have the opportunity to work up clinical cases and work with veterinarians to discuss the options for therapy. If patients are available, supervised spay and neuters of cats from the local shelter can be performed by the student. The student will have the support of staff veterinarians for case work up, discussion of current topics in the profession and professional development.

Comprehensive small animal experience. Includes internal medicine, surgery, and alternative medicine. Student will get hands on experience in clinical setting. Includes an overview of interpreting financial statements and making decisions based on those statements.
We are a fast paced 6 doctor practice that does not only wellness appointments but also a wide range of surgeries including orthopedics. Our hospital also has a large boarding facility and grooming department. Daily pets from both of these departments make their way to the vet department for treatments while in the building with us for the day.
We are a large volume small animal practice with mutliple doctors. We have a large surgery volume including: Trauma, oncological surgery, soft tissue, and orthopedic surgery. In addition, we receive multiple referral surgeries from all over the state of Ohio.
