Willow Creek Veterinary Service is a 2 doctor practice in Medina, OH. Our caseload is approximately 60% equine (primarily ambulatory) and 40% small animal (in clinic). In addition, we see a small number of camelids and ruminants. Students will shadow doctors on ambulatory and in-clinic appointments, as well as assist in surgery and with hospitalized patients.
You will have the opportunity to observe and participate in surgeries, routine client exams, reproduction and more. You will work with different doctors on different levels of capacity. Surgeries may vary from regular spays and neuters to laporoscopic procedures, surgical A.I.'s and C-Sections. You will also have the opportunity to see our emergency side of things. We are open 24/7 and have staff here all the time.

The experience consists of observing and participating in veterinary diagnostic lab procedures with emphasis on avian species (mainly poultry and wildlife). The procedures include client interviews for histories, blood collection, gross post mortem exams, histopathology and other supporting tests including serology, bacteriology, parasitology, molecular biology. Field trips to sites such as farms, hatcheries, processing plants, off-site meetings may be incorporated as schedules allow.
Our goal is for the student to gain real world experience with small animal medicine and surgery. We will push the student to step out of their comfort zone and not simply follow our doctor around. We will arrange for some surgeries from our local shelter to help gain more experience in spays and neuters. Gaining time in communicating with the clients is important and one we think can be difficult for students.
Anoka Equine offers two week extenships to veterinary students throughout the calendar year. Externs will be assigned daily to one of our doctors for both in-clinic and ambulatory appointments.. Doctors will go over procedures and diagnostic techniques of the cases that are seen that day. Externs will be scheduled with all of our doctors (schedule permitting) to gain a broad learning experience. . Hands on experience is common, though depends on the experience of the student.

Local (to Ohio State) small animal hospital. The goal of the rotation is to expose and expand students' knowledge of a wide variety of animals in a private practice setting. Caseload is 50% cat/dog and 50% exotic animals including (but not limited to): exotic companion mammals (rabbitts, ferrets, rats, hamsters, etc), avian (fom small budgies to large macaws), reptiles (snakes, turtles, lizards, etc), and non-tradional species (skunks, racoons, raptors, invertebrae, aquatic species). Also associated with the Ohio Wildlife Center, so some wildlife and rehab medicine is performed. Most students choose this rotation to prepare for seeing exotic animals after graduation. You do not need to have any experience with exotic animals to take this rotation, although prior experiences will certainly help.
Clinical experience in a mixed animal private practice. With exposure to small animal and dairy medicine and surgery. Kelsey will be expected to go on farm calls and observe in the small animal clinic.
