The Brevard Zoo offers 4-6 week externships to clinical veterinary students. Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of close to one-thousand animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and lemur encounters.
The educational goal of the veterinary externship is to provide the student with a broad base of experiences and knowledge pertaining to the field of zoological medicine. The extern will accompany the veterinarians and staff and observe or participate in daily activities, clinical procedures, and preventive medicine. The extern will also assist with daily care, feeding, cleaning and observation of hospitalized and/or quarantine animals. Up to five days of the externship may be spent shadowing keepers, one day for each zoo area: Florida, South America, Africa, Australasia, and Paws-On (domestic, educational, and aquatic animals). The extern will also attend full staff meetings, keeper meetings, and informal rounds. Externs will use any other non-clinical time to expand their knowledge of zoological medicine using resources made available to them.

We have multiple hospitals in different locations to choose from. The areas of location are Akron, Warren, Youngstown, Solon, and Brunswick. Our doctors have special interests in dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, oncology and exotics. Dr Grguric has worked with the OVMA and the AzVMA (Arizona Veterinary Medical Association) to develop mentorship programs and focus groups for new graduates. We are working to develop programs that will help veterinary students to learn more and obtain more experience. The student will work closely with one of our 16 doctors where they will be involved in case studies and surgeries. They will also be exposed to orthopedics that include TTA surgeries, fracture repairs, cruciate surgery, MPL surgery and pelvic surgical repairs. For dentistry they will be able to see root canals and extensive dental procedures. Patients are hospitalized and the students will be exposed to morning rounds and treatment programs. The student will be able to do some minor surgeries under the guidance of a lead doctor and the student will be able to see clients and patients in an exam room setting.

The zoo has a very modern veterinary hospital and is fully staffed with 3 full-time veterinarians, 1 post-graduate veterinary intern, 1 zoo nutritionist, 3 veterinary technicians, 2 hospital keepers, and 1 registrar. We are a small animal general practice with two and a half full time equivalent veterinarians. We see routine annual exams as well as sick visits and have the capability of offering digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, video otoscopy, and in house labwork. The student would gain a wide range of experiences in general small animal practice and various routine and non routine surgeries (OVH, castration, abscesses, dentals and extractions, mass removals, exploratory laparotomy, etc). All doctors are willing and excited to teach eager participants.
We expect students to be eager to learn and show an enthusiasm for the profession. They must be willing to pitch in and help with even the most mundane of tasks. Their primary responsibility would be to shadow the doctor and learn and provide assistance where needed. In return, we would do our best to explain critical thinking and working through our differential diagnoses.

We offer an externship for 4th year students in our emergency and critical care department. Hours are either 7am-6pm or 4pm-2am. We encourage students to spend time on both shifts as they can be quite different. Students will go into exam rooms with doctors, perform their own exams and discuss a plan. They may also be asked to help with technical duties during down times. Other specialties in the hospital that students may be exposed to include: Surgery, Dermatology, Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Internal Medicine and Pathology.
Student is to ride with a doctor every day and participate in all aspects of practice: Repro (herd checks), surgery, medicine, consults, emergency duty at night. We encourage a lot of hands on participation and case work ups. We also welcome students to sit in on business meetings (every Tues over lunch).
