Description of Elective Experience:

Student will work with veterinary associates to perform physical exams, make diagnostic recommendations, discuss results and cases, and establish patient treatment plans.  Students will get to work on clinical skills, as well as work on aspects of communication in veterinary medicine.  Students will also be able to participate in surgical and dental cases, as deemed appropriate.

We are a fast paced, high volume, multi-doctor practice. This would be the perfect fit for a flexible schedule. We’re open six days a week, including afternoon shifts, working Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 9 PM and Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to Noon. Here at the North Main Animal Clinic and Clayton Animal Hospital you’ll experience the day to day operation of a well rounded, four doctor general practice. Students will actively participate in sick and wellness appointments, as well as surgical procedures. We will provide a full clinic experience for all of our veterinary student externs, from  performing examinations, working up differential diagnoses, reviewing lab work and diagnostics, and discussing treatment methods and protocols.

Students will have an opportunity to spend time at a non-specialty full service progressive small animal hospital.  A wide variety of clinical and surgical cases are seen at our 8-doctor busy practice and students will have the opportunity to fully engage in the practice.  Emphasis will be on allowing the student to be an active participant in large scope of appointments ranging from normal wellness exams to critically ill patients.  Students will have the ability to enhance their abilities in history taking, physical examination, assessment, treatment, and diagnostic plans.  Focus will also be placed on working on good client communication skills.  Students will engage with the veterinarian in a variety of surgeries performed in general practice. 

With students interested in potential ownership, Dr. Fisher will provide time to discuss the business management side of veterinary medicine.  Topics will include purchasing a clinic, basic financials of ownership, HR, and any other areas of student interest.

Shadowing a veterinarian. Taking client histories and initial physical examinations of patients. Monitoring anesthesia for surgeries. Assisting in surgery and anesthetic procedures. Performing small animal examinations under direct supervision of veterinarian.

The student will gain the experience and knowledge of a fast paced progressive 2 doctor general practice. We are open 6 days a week, fully booked with wellness, illness and surgical appointments. We promote wellness preventative medicine by doing thorough evaluations with recommendations of wellness blood work for most appointments. The student will shadow our doctors or actively participate in the appointments including surgery.

On-the-job training and shadowing with Army Veterinary Corps officers and team, to include the Animal/Working dog mission and the Food Protection mission. Student may be working in the clinic helping to see patient appointments, assist with or conduct training for Military Working Dogs and their handlers, perform routine exams and preventive care on Military Working Dogs, assist in food protection and defense with the Food team, participate in public health areas, such as rabies bite reports or rabies advisory boards.

Work with an experienced veterinarian in a woman-owned, small animal private practice setting. This internship will provide hands on experience with a wide array of client interactions from diagnostics to preventative medicine. Gain experience with state-of-the-art radiography for full skeleton and dental imaging, laser surgical tools and learn how to provide laser therapy. Gain an understanding of the balancing act required to balance business needs with practice needs, and the charm of small business veterinary medicine. Finally, learn how to be your own boss, what it takes to run a successful vet clinic, the 'behind the scenes' skills required to succeed, and the endless opportunities that exist in small animal veterinary medicine.

Students are given the chance to observe and assist with office and field activities. Office work can involve discussions about import/export, epidemiology and emergency preparedness and response. Field work may include visits to livestock auctions, slaughter facilities, or various animal agriculture related businesses. Students may have the opportunity to attend meetings with representatives from various livestock commodity groups and other state and federal agencies.
