Helping Hands is a low cost/ high volume surgery and dentistry clinic whos mission is to prevent euthanasia precipitated by owners financial limitations. Although our services are limited to and focused on surgery and dentistry, these services are provided by experienced general practitioners (We do not have board certified surgeons or dentist on staff). Helping Hands provides an opportunity for students to shadow veterinarians in surgery and dentistry while learning to balance the challenges of providing the highest care possible within a low cost business model structure. The student will shadow several board-certified clinical pathologists and interact with pathology residents on diagnostic service duty and in rounds and journal club. Opportunities will also be available for sitting in on graduate and professional courses related to clinical pathology and general pathology.
Students will be doing an Externship with Heartland Veterinary Partners at Cat Clinic of Destin. This will focus on Feline only medicine.
Student will be immersed in busy, full service private hospital providing general care to pet dogs, cats, rabbits and the occasional other small mammal.
Schedule will consist of seeing patients on an outpatient basis with a small population of patients requiring in hospital treatment over several days. Although emergencies of practice's existing clients are seen during working hours, we do not provide after hours emergency care. Hours are 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday.
Surgeries are performed several days a week and include all typical elective procedures and dentals. Other surgeries regularly scheduled include gastropexies, lateral suture repair of cruciate ligament ruptures and rabbit spays and neuters.
Student will be shown how the staff interacts and how the flow of care is creates in order to have patients well and sick care met.
Student will be involved in seeing patients and helping to determine care under the supervision of Dr. Scibetta and associates. The weekly schedule will mirror that of a typical associate along with a typical caseload. Most days will consist of seeing a combination of well and sick out patient visits with time each week to work on special diagnostics (ultrasounds) and one full surgery day.
Immersion in clinical and surgical dermatology in small animals.
