An externship at VCA is an opportunity to practice and gain constructive feedback working along with our medical teams in case management and procedural skills. It involves immersion in daily operational tasks such as medical rounds, client communications, diagnostic acumen, and patient planning. It introduces Woofware and WoofU, our custom medical record management system and educational support platforms. Externship length is typically 2-4 weeks based upon school programs, negotiable.

Mokena Animal Clinic is a busy small animal general practice. Most of our patients are dogs and cats. However, we do see some exotic pets. The student will be able to observe the day to day activites within the practice including well visits, sick visits, and general surgery. The student will also be able to learn client communication skills.
The elective experience would comprise of everyday small animal veterinary duties from taking appointments, diagnosing/treating patients, and performing surgical procedures.
Charles River Laboratories is a contract research organization with opportunities for veterinary students to learn laboratory animal medicine with both rodents and larger animals. The student will have a variety of experiences during their time with CRL. They will have some hands on technical training with our training department, shadow clinical veterinarians and learn of their role in preclinical safety evaluations and discuss case management, they will have the opportunity to spend some time with our necropsy, pathology, and clinical pathology departments to learn about the importance of these areas within safety assessment, have a project to work on and present at the completion of the experience, spend time with our behavior staff, and spend some time within our surgery department.
Commercial chicken egg-producing operation based in central Minnesota. Student will work with company veterinarian approximately 40-50 hours a week. Evenings and weekends are not required. Student many have the opportunity to spend time practicing clinical skills with other employees if scheduling permits. Student will travel with veterinarian or other employees to conventional and cage free pullet and laying hen farms in Central MN. Travel times within the company’s MN holdings will range from 10-90 minutes. Daily routines include flock wellness exams, sample collection for ongoing management trials, meetings with various company stakeholders, informal consultations with farm managers and other company stakeholders, and record writing and data analysis. Student will observe Forsman Farm’s veterinarian’s approach to flock health management and have opportunities to practice flock record keeping techniques as much as possible. Student will be assigned a data-management project to complete as time allows.
Students rotate between 3 properties owned and operated by the Audubon Nature Institute. The properties include the Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and the Freeport McRoran Species survival center. In addition, students are also invited to assist with the rescue and rehabilitation of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles through the Coastal Wildlife Network. Students daily duties will include assisting with work ups and treatments of cases, managing wildlife cases that present to the Zoo, pariticipating in Necropsies, and completeing weekly reading and written assignments covering a wide variety of taxa.
We are a large animal ambulatory private practice, mostly dealing with equine. The student will be shadowing two doctors in the practice 5-6 days of the week as they go on out on their daily rounds and any emergencies that arise during the day.
HQHVSN and vaccination mobile clinic that serves 14 counties in Western, PA partnering with over 20 community groups. We focus on education and work closely with rescue and TNVR groups to provide quality care for all patients. We provide HQHVSN for cats and vaccination, testing and wellness care for both dogs and cats.
