We are offering a two week externship to a fourth year veterinary student. The student will gain knowledge of the interworkings of a busy general practice. Given the new Covid Pandemic and Parking Lot Policies, the veterinary experience and client interaction is very different. The student will be able to experience that first hand.

Haven Animal Hospital is a small animal (cat/dog) practice that serves the community of Grand Haven, MI. We perform routine vaccinations, wellness visits, sick exams, diagnostic workups, and perform various soft tissue surgeries.

Eastern Animal Hospital is a large, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital complete with primary, surgical, dental, and urgent care/emergency services. We are a multi-doctor practice and have a visiting orthopaedic surgery specialist who works from our hospital a couple days a week. We have an ultrasonographer who comes to the practice a couple days a week as well. The extern will be able to work alongside tenured and less seasoned doctors in a team setting seeing a wide-range of cases. We are frequently sought after for advanced medical care. We have an intensive care unit and have support staff on-site 24/7/365. A veterinarian is on-call when one is not in the building. We perform most all soft-tissue surgeries at our hospital. We have a full dentistry suite complete with all that is needed to provide the best care. We have excellent relationships with local specialists and have the ability to send patients for CT/MRI at John’s Hopkins. Our hospital is located right off of Interstate 95 in southeast Baltimore.  Our vision is "To make a difference in the lives of pets and their families" via our mission which is "To deliver excellent veterinary medicine matched with an exceptional experience."

Our AAHA-Accredited four-doctor small mammal practice treats patients ranging from cats and dogs to ferets, rats and rabbits. The student will observe and assist with out-patient appointments, such as sick consultations and preventative care appointments. They will observe and assist with surgical procedures such as routine spays, neuters, declaws, and dentals, as well as more technical surgeries such as growth removals and emergency exploratory surgeries. They will observe and assist with various diagnostic tools such as bloodwork, digital x-ray, digital cytologies and ultrasounds. The student will also participate in daily doctors rounds.

We serve clients that consider us and their pets as part of their family in the west suburbs of Chicago.

The student will design and deliver a module on Food Security for 12 Master of Science in Global Health Delivery (MGHD) in One Health students at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. This 5 credit Food Security module will examine the complex global problems of food security, food safety and sustainable agriculture. Students will learn about sustainable food systems and how we can feed our growing population, while preserving and natural resources for future generations. Students will also learn about food safety, particularly in our interconnected world. How to engage academics, government and industry to solve food security will highlight the importance of a One Health approach

Students will observe surgeries, including but no limited to: sex altering, mass removals, and dental cleanings with extractions.  Students will also have the opportunity to observe wellness exams on puppies and kittens, annual exams, sick patients, euthanaisa and farm animals brought into the clinic., lameness in companion and performace animals which incorporate traditional diagnostics as well as Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine,  Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy and Veterinary Rehabilitation Therapy to diagnose and treat patients with a multimodal or holistic approach.    They have the opportunity to ride along on farm calls for horses, goats, sheep, hogs, and cattle.   We enjoy answering questions and teaching necessary skills to complete their Veterinary education.

Elemental Veterinary Center & Pet Spa is an integrative experience teaching students to address patients' total well being - whether it be a routine health check-up, a sick visit, acupuncture, ultrasound imaging and therapy, or surgery. Our innovative approach to medicine integrates the latest in modern medical techniques with the influence of Eastern medicine.  Students will gain experience in Integrative Medicine practice that is not readily available in most veterinary college curriculum.
