This is our first request for an externship. We have been open one year. Dr. Davis has been practicing medicine for 19 years.
Cryan Veterinary Hospital has a robust "real world" clinical experinence and case load. Dr. Eric Ratliff does a wide range of mid-level surgeries including orthopedics. He recieves referrals from other hosptials and also travels to other clinics to perform surgery. The student would accompany on these trips gaining insight into the opperations of other practices. We have several excellent medical doctors including Dr. Deanna Balazs who has special interest in behavioral, alternative medicine, and ultrasound. Dr. Keith Dryburgh has an interest in sports medicine, and Dr. Emily Hoffman is a wonderfull diagnositian. In-house chemotherapy, and a top-notch dental program are also offered.
In addition to clinic experinces with an emphais on surgery, the studuent would recieve extensive and diverse insight into practice management and ownership. Specific areas of emphais will be variation of practice styles, budget and financial analysis, leadership,and personnel management.
Banfield Pet Hospital is a small animal general practice. We have a strong focus on preventive medicine and surgery, but we are a full service veterinary practice. Daily preventive care case load includes routine vaccinations, ovariohysterectomy, castration, and dental cleanings. We also care for a variety of illnesses and non-preventive care surgical interventions including, but not limited to diabetes mellitus, gastroenteritis, dermatitis, otitis, mass removals, dental extractions, and cystotomy. Veterinary elective participants shadow their mentor doctor through all aspects of day to day practice. Students work with their mentor to work through presented cases and develop treatment plans.
Eagle's Nest Animal Hospital is a small animal veterinary hospital in King George, VA. Since opening in 2007 we have built our client base through excellent medical care, relationships with the community - including animal control and rescue leagues, fair prices, and the availability to pet owners stationed at Dahlgren Naval Base roughly 12 miles away. Eagle's Nest, led by owner Samantha Judge, DVM and her two associates, offers clients small animal wellness, surgery, reproductive services, dentistry, oncology, digital X-Ray, acupuncture, herbal medicine, grooming, and boarding. During the externship the veterinary student will gather experience in these areas of veterinary medicine through shadowing and hands-on support, including assistance with surgery. The student will also observe how we thrive as a doctor-owned practice in a heavily populated but rural setting. This externship is full of practical experience especially fit for a student looking to work in small animal medicine.
Students will shadow all vets in rooms, surgeries, treatments and rounds with doctors.
Assisting with small animal medicine, surgery and dentistry as well as large animal medicine, surgery and farm calls.

Students will ride with vets to experience a normal working day of a large animal veterinarian. There will be opportunity to improve/develop palpation skills. Students will also be encouraged to participate in sick cow work, dystocias, surgery, calf vaccination etc. The student will also be exposed to general equine practice that will include, lameness, reproduction, and dentistry.
Students will spend 2-8 weeks assisting the veterinarians and zoo staff with all aspects of clinical zoological medicine, including but not limited to: daily animal care, medical rounds, general medicine and surgery, clinical pathology, radiology, pathology, and record keeping. Students are encouraged to make use of the literature and other resources available to prepare for procedures and current cases.
