Brown Equine Hospital is located in Somerset, Pennsylvania, a small town nestled in the Laurel Highlands, a region known for its beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.  Brown Equine Hospital is a referral hospital with one boarded surgeon, a doctor residency trained in internal medicine, and 24 hour technical staff.  The caseload is varied and includes medical, surgical, lameness, and emergency cases in western and English performance horses, pleasure horses, Draft horses, and Standardbred racehorses.  Hands-on learning (including ample opportunities to “scrub in”), a busy caseload, and stall side rounds allow students to gain exposure and experience to many aspects of equine practice.

SHPC is a fast paced, busy general small animal practice in the Greater Cincinnati suburbs. We see both routine visits and emergencies regularly. Our hours do extend into the late evening, which enables us to provide comprehensive care to a larger population of clients. Routine visits for canines and felines and are tailored to the specific pet and owner. We do see some exotics for routine care (check ups, tooth, beak, nail trims). Emergency care for canines, felines, and some exotics is a point our practice takes pride in. We will always squeeze in sick pets whether they are new or existing clients. These range from simple diarrhea cases to full surgical emergencies. We triage, stabilize, treat within our clinic however we do have good relationships with local specialists and ERs. Therefore critical cases needing a specialist opinion or intensive overnight care are referred out. Our surgical caseload is diverse. We do elective routine surgeries, many orthopedics, and emergency surgeries as indicated.

We are a five doctor, busy small animal hospital.  Students will be shadowing doctors with up to thirty years of experience.  The responsibilities will include client communication, physical exams (to compare with staff vets), anesthesia, surgical assistance, dental evaluation and therapy, ultrasonography, radiology case rounds, clinical pathology as well as some technical duties.

Dulles South Veterinary Center is a privately owned hybrid model clinic, housing both a general practice and urgent care/ER practice.  We are fortunate to staff at least 7 DVMs, and numerous skilled technicians and assistants.  The entire staff loves sharing knowledge and engaging veterinary students in our day to day activities. We offer flexible scheduling, depending on student needs, preferences, and interests. 

Extern Objectives:

  • To gain perspective on operations of a private, general practice and emergency facility
  • To practice overall case management skills, including ordering and interpreting diagnostics, and formation of treatment plans
  • To increase confidence with client communications, including financial discussions
  • To gain experience with emergency procedures, dental procedures, and routine clinical skills
  • To present a case summary, morbidity and mortality rounds, or staff education session

Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital is a growing, fast paced, small animal hospital.  We have been in business since 1962.  We opened a new 10,000 square foot small animal hospital in Alexandria, KY in October 2018.  We currently have a team of 5 full time and 2 part time doctors.  Students doing their elective experience with Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital will have the opportunity to work with our collaborative team of veterinarians thru outpatient appointments and surgical procedures.  A typical day at Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital includes roughly 10 surgical procedures and roughly 50 outpatient appointments per day.

PIC Swine Veterinary Externship Program

 

Objective

To expose proactive swine veterinary students to PIC, a pioneering genetics company, with a focus on the role of the swine veterinarian in a high health breeding stock multiplication system.

Program Structure

Two-week schedule combining field experience and office experience in a premier swine genetics company.

Busy small animal ER and specialty clinic with specialists in surgery (2), internal medicine, radiology, oncology, and anesthesiology. Average caseload 40 emergencies per day with 10 - 12 inpatients. Students shadow the emergency doctors and senior nursing staff. Proficient students will be invited to perform procedures, such as laceration repairs, urinary catheter placement, thoracocentesis, etc, and assist with emergency soft-tissue surgeries.
