Participants in the Externship Program experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of your mentor doctor and in accordance with the state’s practice act, you will gather histories, perform complete physical exams, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop client communication skills, polish your clinical/technical skills and learn Banfield's approach to business.

The student would shadow a veterinarian 10 hours a day, 4 days a week in a busy 4 doctor veterinary practice.
Hayfield Animal Hospital is a full service small animal facility, offering both routine and emergency treatment options for clients. We pride ourselves on being prepared to handle all aspects of treatment for pets, by maintaining a large three table surgical suite, dental and whole body radiography, ultrasound and testing equipment. Although procedures do vary from week to week, it is realistic to expect to experience most if not all of the following:
- Ovariohysterectomy (spay)
- Pet neutering
- Hernia repair
- Laceration repair
- Extensive and simple mass removal
- Eye enucleation
- Soft tissue
- Limb, digit or tail amputation
- Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)
- Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) repair- *TPLO, *Extracapsular stabilization
- Trauma and emergency surgery
- Veterinary diagnostics
- Cystotomy
Student will work in a busy 9 veterinary small animal hospital. Will assist visiting
internists with consultations and ultrasounds. Also will observe board certified surgeon.
Extern will do in hospital treatments and research complex cases. will have the oppurtunity
to perform spays and neuters. extern will assist with patient exams and vaccinations. Will
have the oppurtunity to perform dental procedures and extractions. Client and staff communication
skills will be reinforced.

As a Vytelle Intern, you will experience first-hand how our global team of industry experts are working to bring a new certainty to performance, health and genetic progress. At Vytelle, the Bovine Reproductive Specialist (DVM) is an integral part of our global team to help bring certainty to genetic progress in livestock. The DVM will perform ovum pickup procedures, embryo transfers, and work alongside team members to perform all duties associated with embryo production, data entry, and communication while adhering to Vytelle standard operating procedures.
Our externship experiences run in two week blocks and are open to 3rd and 4th year DVM students with a strong interest in advanced bovine reproduction.
Responsibilities would include:
- Working side-by-side with Vytelle’s veterinarians and embryologists.
- Experiencing and participating in ovum pickup (OPU) events and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) processes. No FSH required.
- Gaining specialized industry knowledge, training, and experience that will directly apply to future practices.
- Customizing an externship experience that brings you closer to your professional goals and accommodates your academic schedule.
- Establishing connections and networking with talented industry professionals across the company.
General health care: Dentistry, vaccines, coggins, skin disease, exams, and castrations.
Reproduction: Artificial insemination 100 cases/year, stallion collection 55 cases/year, semen freezing 4 stallions/year, problem mares, high risk foaling.
Surgery: 85% Soft tissue, and 15% orthopedic. Approximately 42 colic surgeries/year
Referral: Emergencies, surgeries, medicine, lameness
Type of cases as percentage:
15% emergency (colic, lacerations, neuro)
20% Lameness, pre purchase
15% referral
20% General health (vaccines, coggins, exams, skin disease, castrations)
10% Reproduction
20% surgery
Dr Noah’s Ark is a very very exhaustingly busy small animal clinic. We also partner with a local raptor program, wild life rehab center, and provide care for exotics.

Barnesville Veterinary Hospital is a general practice veterinary hospital in Barnesville, Ohio that services primarily to clientele from Belmont county and its neighboring counties. It has a ancillary office in Woodsfield, Ohio as well. It is a private owned hospital owned and operated by David Ralston that has 3 full time veterinarians at the Barnesville site and has historically provided services to both large (field service) and small animals.
