Local (to Ohio State) small animal hospital.  The goal of the rotation is to expose and expand students' knowledge of a wide variety of animals in a private practice  setting.  Caseload is 50% cat/dog and 50% exotic animals including (but not limited to): exotic companion mammals (rabbitts, ferrets, rats, hamsters, etc), avian (fom small budgies to large macaws), reptiles (snakes, turtles, lizards, etc), and non-tradional species (skunks, racoons, raptors, invertebrae, aquatic species).  Also associated with the Ohio Wildlife Center, so some wildlife and rehab medicine is performed.  Most students choose this rotation to prepare for seeing exotic animals after graduation.  You do not need to have any experience with exotic animals to take this rotation, although prior experiences will certainly help.

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will be exposed to all aspects of a rural mixed animal practice.  We are a very busy 2 1/2 doctor practice.  A large portion of our business is small animal, but one veterinarian is an exclusive large animal practitioner.

Student will be allowed to assist and even perform some basic surgery and routine care depending on student's level of experience.

We are not a fancy practice, but we are very hands on and press upon the student the need to use their skill set to come up with a diagnostic plan and possible treatment options by using their minds and exam skills before moving on to diagnositics.  ie.. we come up with a list of possible causes before we move onto further baseline test... bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal, radiology, etc.

If you are looking for CT scans and MRI options, this practice is not for you.
