Description of Elective Experience:

The SeaWorld Parks Externship is offered in the 3 SeaWorld Parks with a large aquatic animal population and Busch Gardens Florida, in Tampa, Florida, also with a large population of terrestrial animals.

The externship program in all 4 parks consists of a 3-4 week preceptorship for veterinary students wanting to augment their knowledge and experience in non-domestic animal medicine. The program is designed for fourth-year veterinary students. They will be given a full range of opportunities in aquatic and terrestrial animal husbandry and medicine which includes whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, walruses, sharks and rays, marine and freshwater fishes, penguins, and many other species of birds, amphibians, and reptiles at the SeaWorld parks; as well as gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, tigers, cheetahs, elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, giraffes, zebras, antelope, kangaroos, wallabies, aardvarks, giant anteaters, and many other small-sized terrestrial mammals at Busch Gardens. Within such a diverse collection, there are some unique aquatic animals only found in certain parks, such as, the polar bears and southern sea otters at SeaWorld California, Pacific white-sided dolphins at SeaWorld Texas, and manatees at SeaWorld Florida. Most terrestrial mammals are based at Busch Gardens Florida.

Applications are accepted between September 1st and November 15th each year.

We offer a great variety of small animal and large animal experience here at Endless Mountians Veterinary Center. I think we are a very well-rounded mixed animal practice. The student will have the opportunity to do some work in both areas. We typically have our externs help with our small animal appointments, vaccines, working up cases, seeing some emergencies and sick pets, as well as performing surgeries. On the large animal side, we do a lot of herd health recommendations, pregnancy checks, routine surgeries, and emergencies. We are a 24/7 emergency clinic - so the student would have the opportiunity to see some on-call hours/emergencies as well. We start our week with a doctor meeting between the owners and associates to discuss various cases - the extern would be present for that as well.

Fourth year students rotate on the nutrition service and maintain secondary case control under the direction of a resident or a faculty member. There are currently two residents and two DACVN faculty members involved with the UT Veterinary Nutrition Service. The majority of our case load is distance-based with consultations taking place via phone or video conferencing. Students listen in on all consultations and will be expected to write up a consultation summary for at least one case from each receiving day. If fully booked, which is a common occurrence, the students will be involved with 8 new patient consultations and multiple recheck appointments each week. Topic rounds take place on a daily basis and the students will also participate in a multi-center distance-based journal club on Thursday afternoons. ICU rounds are performed on a daily basis in order to assess inpatient feeding recommendations. When applicable, students are also involved with any in-person outpatient appointments, weight loss rechecks, and consultations for other services within the hospital.
