Description of Elective Experience:

VCH offers a small animal general externship with some emergency cases at an AAHA hospital with a large case volume and great clientele.  

Our practice offers 30 minute appointments to give appropriate time to work through different cases and to discuss patient care. 

Team rounds are done every day and a monthly educational meeting is held at lunch time once every month.  

Some advanced services provided at VCH include:

digital radiology, ultrasonography, consults with internal medicine, orthopedic and soft tissue surgeons, laser therapy, dental radiology and extractions

Students are exposed to all aspects of laboratory animal medicine including but not limited to exposure to clinical cases and facility round in facilities housing various laboratory animal species e.g traditional rodents, non-traditoinal species, zebar fishes, xenopus frogs, agricultural species, avian colonies.There is also exposure to various IACUC activities including protocol review and SOP writing and reviews. Students also participate in residency activities geared towards ACLAM board study e.g. Journal Club, Blue Book Study Group, Slide Rounds and didactic lectures during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Western Carolina Regional Animal HospitAL - Veterinary Emergency Hospital is an AAHA accredited and a Certified VECCS Level 2 Emergency - Critical Care hospital. We provide the student with as much hands on experience as cases allow. We stress the problem solving approach to diagnosis and therapy.  We challenge the student to think critically. We continually stress and coach on the fundamental principles of human relations and how to apply principles to client communications.

Private small animal practice started May 2013 by Dr. Houser, an OSU CVM 2006 graduate. We focus on preventive care, including AVMA guidelines for canine vaccination, AAFP guidelines for feline vaccines, AHS guidelines for heartworm testing and prevention.  Routine surgeries are performed, including spay/neuter and declawing.  We also have  a strong focus on dentistry and do many dental prophylaxis.  We have dental radiographs as well as a high-speed drill..  The practice is equipped with in-house Idexx blood profile/CBC/snapshot, digital radiographs, and ultrasound.  I have a special interest (but not board specialty) in internal medicine and dermatology.  My associate has a special interest in dentistry, surgery, and also performs acupuncture

Student will be rotating through the different services of our specialty hospital being paired with a specialist for each day including Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, Surgery Emergency Medicine and Ophthalmology. Our hospital is a private practice tertiary referral hospital.

Mixed Animal Practice

50% large animal, 50% small animal

Large animal is 80% Dairy, 5% Beef, 5% Equine 5% Sheep/Goat, 5% Swine

Feline only practice for the past 26 years, overall 36 yrs experience. We believe that we excel in the handling of cats and creating as comfortable an experience as possible. Student would shadow Doctor and learn my style of exam, interacting with clients and patients. Decide on a course of treatment/laboratory work on his/her own then discuss with doctor. Learn and execute the handling of different personalities of cats. Learn about surgery in a private practice setting, and to get some hands on experience with direct supervision of doctor. Develop an understanding about how a practice operates, providing quality care but still generating an income. Student would observe the interaction of Dr and employees, and between employees for the smooth operation of the practice and delivering a quality service to clients, giving the clients a sense of comfort and satisfaction.

Students will shadow veterinary behavioral consultations involving canine, feline, equine and avian patients. Hands-on experience may be provided depending on the qualifications of the student under the direct guidance of the Veterinarian and Registered Veterinary Technician (on a case-by-case basis).  Students will be observing and interacting with 2 Veterinary Technician Specialists in Behavior and RVT's who are Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partners in behavior therapy appointments.
