Student will be exposed to all areas of beef cattle practice. Reproductive ultrasounding will be one area of emphasis this time of year. Student can also expect to be involved in calf preconditioning, foot care, sick animals, injuries, and salebarn inspection and services. We also do all the basic small animal, small ruminant and equine medicine and surgery. The student can expect plenty of hands on experience depending on their enthusiasm and level of competency.
The goal of the externship is to provide students with a full understanding of the internship offered and to further explore a career in performance horse medicine, referral practice, and general practice. Externs will be included in the daily routine of all veterinarians. Externs are also expected to be available evenings and weekends during their stay. Depending on the time of year the work load varies from few hospitalized cases to a full ICU!
Standardbred stud work. Foaling mares. Observation of stallion collection and processing. Scanning mare, artifical insemination. Handling of mares and foals.
Current Course Description:
The 2 week clinical rotation is designed as a continuation of the 3rd year courses to practice concepts of radiation safety, radiographic image interpretation, anatomy and diagnostic skills. In addition, radiation safety, equipment use, quality control and acquisition of the common radiographic views of the thorax, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system of all species will be practiced in the clinical setting of the teaching hospital. Specific and common clinical disease processes will be discussed in topic morning rounds using clinical case examples.
Course Goal(s)
The intent of this rotation is to provide the student with instruction for making high quality radiographs, opportunity to practice routine special procedures, and principles for radiographic interpretation. The student will use knowledge gained in didactic coursework to refine their interpretive skills. The major emphasis for this rotation is small animal diagnostic radiology
Learning objectives
By the end of the rotation students will be able to:
- Acquire radiographs of all species and all regions with diagnostic quality.
- Use radiographic equipment.
- Apply radiation safety measures.
- Recognize all basic radiographic views and nomenclature in small animals and large animals.
- List indications for radiogprhaic studies
- Systematically assess and describe radiographic images using roentgen signs and opacities.
- Identify normal anatomical structures in each imaging study.
- Recognize abnormal findings in imaging studies.
- List pathological conditions that can produce given abnormal image findings.
- Formulate differential diagnoses based on the pattern of observed abnormal image finding.
- Propose a final diagnosis based on the image findings and clinical presentation.
- Propose additional imagining diagnostics and therapy given abnormal findings and diagnosis.
Externs should be enrolled as a third or fourth year veterinary student.
Miamitown Equine is seeking externship students who are also interested in a job opportunity with our practice. This externship is a great way to get to know the practice and see if you would be a good fit. We are a growing 1.5 doctor large animal practice located in the greater Cincinnati area. Our practice is 95% equine and 5% small ruminant, cattle, and camelid. We are primarily ambulatory, but based out of our partnered small animal practice. We have a wellness-based approach to equine medicine and see patients that range from foals to geriatrics, show horses to backyard pets. We strive to practice high quality medicine with digital radiography, ultrasound and power dentistry.
Mentoring is a cornerstone, with frequent interaction and discussion over cases. One doctor at our practice has been a horse doctor for 40 years- if you have a question about it, he’s probably seen it! The other doctor is a more recent graduate who still remembers exactly what it was like to transition from school into practice and and can help with any issues along the way.
We are in a great location near Cincinnati, Ohio with a great food scene and many craft breweries. We believe that you can be a horse doctor and also have a good work-life balance!

Participate and shadow in a 24 hour seven day a week emergency and general practice practice facility. The extern will also take place in our zoo med program with the local zoo as well as wildlife center.
