In accordance with the State Practice Act, students will be provided the opportunity to:

  • • Gain experience in general pet medicine in a bond-centered practice.
  • • Understand Banfield’s best practice standards, code of conduct and ethics.
  • • Understand the concepts of quality medicine and preventive care.
  • • Understand how both high quality and high case load can complement each other.
  • • Learn to perform a physical exam and to record a thorough medical history.
  • • Improve technical skills such as: drawing blood,  placing catheters,  giving injections, starting fluids,  assisting with anesthesia and surgeries under the mentor doctor’s       direct supervision.
  • • Collect and interpret laboratory specimens.
  • • Learn how to order the appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • • Learn to establish effective therapeutic plans.
  • • Learn how to properly restrain dogs, cats and exotic pets for different medical procedures.
  • • Learn how to efficiently and effectively use hospital equipment.
  • • Learn how to charge appropriately for services provided and why this is important.
  • • Learn and practice effective client and team communication skills.
  • • Learn to work effectively with hospital associates and others critical to your success.

Student will be working with a full time ER veterinarian that also provides relief services and also works with a feline non-profit organization. When not working at the ER(small animal only) the student will have the ability to work in multiple private practice settings(small animal day practice, avian and exotic practice, and house calls(routine care and end-of-life care). In the emergency setting the clinic is located in a multi-specialty clinic and the emergency practice refers to and works with the following practices; internal medicine, oncology, surgery, neurology, and physical therapy.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners provides intership and externship programs available to veterinary school graduates or veterinary students. Our goal is to give you a diverse, high quality clinical experinence with a supportive hospital culture. Externships include rotations through hospital services and allow you to observe out specialists, senior emergency clinicians, residents and interns in action. You can also participate in lectures, journal clubs and rounds where applicable.

We are a 4 veterinarian mixed practice providing services in medicine and surgery.  We also provide reproductive services for the canine, bovine, and equine including  AI, freezing and storing canine and bovine semen, shipping fresh semen from the stud, and bovine embryo transfer.

Student will be assigned to one of the current rotating interns to facilitate logistics, time spent in the hospital, and to discuss the clinical cases throughout each day. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of what services the extern is allowed to shadow and externs frequently jump from service to service throughout the week to meet as many different people as possible.

Small animal (feline and canine) practice in Northwest Ohio.  Student will observe and particapate in every day practice from wellness exams to surgery.

We are a AAHA accredited small animal practice in a state of the art facility.  Veterinary externs will spend mornings assitanting and participating in surgery or dentistry cases.  The afternoons will be shadowing and participating with appointments in our small animal general practice.  Externs will have the opportunity to pefrom physical exams, develop case diagnostic plans, differntial list and treatment plans along side our doctors.  We encourage our externs to participate in surgery and dentistry cases at our hospital.  We have an excellent support staff available for education to our externs and assit them with their learning experiance. Work life balance and self-care are important to the staff  and effort is made to have fun and learn every day at work.

The extern is responsible for performing inpatient and outpatient medical care under the direct supervision of our veterinary staff. The extern will be expected to perform in-house diagnostic tests (hematology, chemistry, and radiology) with competence, perform routine client education, and to assist in surgical procedures. The hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. The extern is expected to arrive each morning no later than 7:45 am. Lunch is scheduled as appropriate, but efforts are made to provide 2 hours each day sometime between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. The extern is expected to stay until all cases are effectively cared for before leaving at the end of the day; generally this is about 6:00 pm. Though not required, it is recommended that the extern comes in on Saturdays due to the volume and variety of cases seen. The extern is not scheduled for Sundays. Sundays can be used to rest, read, relax and reflect back upon the cases seen during the week.

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences Anatomic Pathology group offers 1-3 week externships for those students interested in pursuing additional skills and training in diagnostic anatomic pathology. The college is located in Knoxville, TN.
