Our externs have come from every veterinary school in the U.S. as well as from Canada, Germany, England, Poland, Ireland, and Australia. A typical externship lasts from 1-6 weeks and varies depending on the student’s needs. We provide a place to stay located just behind the clinic.

We also offer a 1 year internship program and our interns are generally picked from the prior year’s class of externs. To see more details on the AVC hospital and facilities, and to check out internship opportunities, please check the Internship portion of the website.

We are a mostly small animal practice in Northwest, Ohio. We see roughly 5-8% large animal (equine, bovine, caprine, ovine and porcine) and some exotic pets. We are a very fast-paced, busy practice in a rural area whose main focus is taking care of our people and their pets. Our practice performs a fair amount of canine reporductive work including artificial and surgical inseminations as well as cesarean sections. An extern with us would get a great view of veterinary medicine. They could perform spays and neuters and observe c- sections, cystotomies, exploratories, dental prophys and many other surgeries. We also have many equipment a tools to help us with medical cases as well. We would analyze bloodwork, read fecals, interpret radiographs and ultrasounds. Our staff enjoys teaching and coaching and we would love to have a veterinary student join our team to better their knowledge of the veterinary profession.
Students will shadow one or more veterinarians in the practice. There will be opportunity to practice diagnostic skills, examine records, palpate/ultrasound cows (student would need to arrange ultrasound usage), assist with surgeries, discuss practice management and regulatory compliance, work in our milk quality lab and all other aspects of a dairy practice. The level of hands on opportunity will be dependent on the comfort level of the student and the particular farms that are being visited. The greater the length of the externship, the greater the ability to practice these skills.
This externship will provide a thorough cross section of a private food animal practice for students with a strong interest in dairy medicine. We hope the student will benefit from our collective practice experience and diversity of backgrounds, while we may benefit from the infusion of energy, ideas and questions from the student.
Externs will have a rounded general practice experience. There will be opportunities to work with 11 doctors within a range of experiences: surgery, appointments, and urgent care.
