We are a busy small animal hospital in southern Ohio. The focus is general practice with mostly dog and cat patients with occasional pocket pets. The mornings consist of routine surgery including spay/neuter, mass removal, primarily soft tissue surgery. The afternoons consist of appointments scheduled every 15 minutes.
Independent poultry health practice working with commercial egg producers. 95% commercial egg layer medicine 5% commercial meat duck medicine. This elective experience will be poultry medicine/flock health based with an emphasis on teaching preventative medicine approaches. Actual farm visits and types of activities will be dependent on the current challenges that are occuring at the time of the rotation. Typical farm or company visits include large volumes of poultry necropsy and pathology that student will be able to participate in fully with a licensed veterinarian.
Will perform physical exams; perform medical, surgical and dental procedures under the supervision of a veterinarian. Help develop a plan of action based on exam, interpretation of lab reports, EKG's and or Radiographs. Provide accurate updates on client records. The student will be giving SQ, IM and IV injections and be familiar with placing IV catheters and properly care for them. Can prepare a patient for surgery, administer anesthesia and monitor patient during surgery and recovery.

Extern will have the opportunity to participate in leishmania research, develop a project for the extent of their time, and shadow lab members and researchers. The student will learn the basic principles of conducting university funded research and writing research papers. The student will conduct in-depth reviews of scientific literature as well as perform bench work experiments relating to their project.
Student will have the opportunity to participate in collecting and recording an accurate patient history, performing physical exams and recording of normal and abnormal findings, making a list of differentials, and assisting in the workup and treatment of patients. This will all be done under the direct supervision of an experienced DVM (with anywhere from 12-25+ years of experience). Additionally, effective communication with pet parents will be taught and put to use - such as the delivery of discharge instructions. Pharmaceuticals, their uses and prescription indications will be learned. End-of-life and euthanasia processes will also be included in learning experience as this is one of the most valued services we offer. Technical skill learning opportunities will be available, such as phlebotomy, injections, IV catheter placement, operating basic medical equipment. Advanced skill opportunities such as endotracheal tube placement, anesthetic monitoring, and surgical assistance will also be available.
