Out externship is a well rounded experience encompassing time on a variety of specialties including but not limited to Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Neurology, and ECC. Behavior and Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation are also available. The extern will be expected to attend daily rounds and participate in case workup under esteemed guidance.
Columbia Pike Animal Hospital & Emergency Center was founded by Dr. Davis Hall in 1975. Over the years we have grown from a single doctor practice to a 24 hour General and Emergency practice with over 30 doctors. We have had a successful internship program for 8+ years. We are the largest privately owned practice in Northern Virginia, seeing an average of 84 cases per day and performing 8 surgeries a day. Our hospital has a Vimago CT scanner, state of the art ultrasound, full in house labs, digital xray, etc. Externs are welcome to spend time with a GP doctor in appointments, on our emergency service, and/or with our surgery team depending on what you prefer. Externs also participate in our weekly intern rounds as well as any other intern events(wet labs, guest speakers, spay/neuter days) during their stay. Kalmbach is a feed and production operation with multiple species including commercial egg laying pullets, layers, sow and meat-type hogs. The student will have the opportunity to spend time with each of these live animal divisions production & technical staff, as well as the staff veterinarians, to develop a well-rounded understanding of each production system as well as the role of a veterinarian in this type of practice setting.
Haskell Valley Veterinary Clinic is a 5 doctor full service small animal practice. The primary practice is Olean New York and an outpatient satellite Clinic is located in Bradford Pennsylvania. The Courtney will be a rotating in both facilities and spend time with all the doctors and will get the opportunity to experience the services provided. Special interests that she has will be emphasized as possible.

-Student will be involved in incoming pathology cases here at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic lab working with senior pathologists and the poultry medicine resident. This includes necropsy, ancillary diagnostics, and histopathology.
-Field visits to both commercial and backyard producers to assess flock health, management, and biosecurity.
-Work on extension articles for publication and be listed as an author.
-Gain experience in the different lab sections at the animal disease diagnostic lab to become more familiar with clinical bacteriology, serology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, and histopathology
During their time at Old Dominion Equine Associates, students will experience a large spectrum of sports medicine and general practice. This will include extensive lameness evaluations and treatments, preventative medicine, reproductive services, and alternative medicine to include acupuncture and chiropractic services. All of our veterinarians carry digital radiographs and digital ultrasounds with them, and we have an inhouse laboratory allowing students to get firsthand experience at not only preforming theses diagnostics, but also interpreting them. We strive to involves each student and allow them hands on opportunities to learn and improve their clinical skill set.
With oversight, students will be responsible for physical examinations with clients present, communicating findings and recommendations with clients, relaying lab results, performing blood draws and other technical skills, monitoring anesthesia, etc.
Throughout the duration of the externship, candidates experience a fast paced environment of the small animal practice field. Externship candidates will be exposed to a variety of appoitments that include but aren't limited to wellness, sick, and surgery related along with client education regarding many medications and practices. The candidate will also be exposed to a broad spectrum of surgical procedures during there time with Healthy Pets of Rome Hilliard.
