Description of Elective Experience:

DEA enforces the provisions of the Controlled Substances Act as the Act pertains to the manufacture, distribution, and dispensing of legally produced controlled substances. Enforcement of applicable provisions is done through the scheduling of licit pharmaceuticals and registering of veterinarians, and other medical professionals, to allow them toreceive, dispense, and write prescriptions for scheduled pharmaceuticals. Regulatory decisions are made through the analysis of public health information, the impact on key partners, such a veterinarians, public input, and other variables.

This externship is with the Chief Data Officer of DEA and the Diversion Control Division, who manages the regulatory program for DEA. The externship provides practical experience on how DEA determines how specific drugs, such as Xylazine, are regulated and the impact of the regulation on veterinarians and other DEA Registrants. This externship will work with DEA staff to gain a better understanding of the analysis of public health information to make regulatory decisions and how decisions impact veterinarians and their daily work.

The Center for Comparative Medicine provides care and housing of animals utilized by the clinical and research faculty in these programs, as well as a variety of research support services.

The student will be involved in one on one assignment with a surgeon who will be performing complex, orthopedic, and soft tissue surgeries. Duties will involve both clinical outpatient and operating room activities.

Rotating through the Neurology department at NCSU.

This 2 credit elective clinical rotation is designed to provide the student with exposure to the medical and surgical management of neurological disease in small animal veterinary patients. Students will assist in the care of patients presenting to the Neurology Service of the Terry Center and will work under the direct supervision of faculty and house officers on the service. The primary objective of the rotation is to provide students with the skills necessary to effectively manage common neurological disorders of dogs and cats in practice.

  • Our practice treats patients ranging from cats and dogs to birds and other exotics. As a hospital, we provide GP, UC and ER services to the species we see. The student will have daily discussions and rounds with the veterinarians, case discussion, treatment discussion and potentially scrub in on surgeries! We serve a diverse clientele and are located in Denver near Denver University.
  • Veterinary externs may be placed with one of our several DVMs pending their interest and goals for their externship. We have DVMs that work on exotics, enjoy surgery, provide acupuncture and rehab, and even leadership/management duties.
