Comstock Equine Hospital is currently excepting externs for the 2023-2024 year. We gladly accept 1st-4th year students. Our veterinarians have years of experience mentoring young veterinary professionals and greatly enjoy the opportunity to teach. Externs participate in both in house and ambulatory cases, emergencies and assist during surgeries. We like to schedule 1-2 week externships as this provides the best timing for increased learning opportunities. We are located just outside of Reno in Pleasant Valley. With close proximity to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra National Forest.
Cat Care Clinic in Ormond Beach, FL is a 3-4 DVM high-quality, feline-exclusive, full-service veterinary practice owned by Amber Carter, DVM, DABVP (Feline Practice). We have two other ABVP veterinarians on staff.
Small animal preventative, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, dentistry. Intern will be exposed and participate in wide variety of small animal medical and surgical cases with hands on experience. Well equipped, full inhouse IDEXX Lab, digital radiography, Ultrasound. We are well known in the Columbus area for treating sick pets with 5 star google reviews. Cases include: Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetes Insipidus, complex pancreatitis, Feline Urological Syndrome with/without urinary tract blockage, otitis externa, media, allergic dermatitis, Flea allergy dermatitis. fear free care is our mainstay.
Students are expected to see cases and be responsible for in-patient care as well as out-patient management in coordination with the senior clinician on the case.
Student will be paired up with a doctor at all times. Pending their request for specific interests, I will make a schedule for them based on their preferences. We will allow students to do as much hands on as they are comfortable with. We will work on restraint, IV catheter placement, blood draws, and radiograph positioning. NG tube placement may be an option pending case load. Students will go into the rooms with the doctor to witness client communication. We do take in some stray animals (so if they are injured, students can perform the surgeries/treatments needed). We will work on suturing as well. We ask that the student has PLIT insurance.
Basic animal husbandry, observation/assistance in medical procedures as appropriate, preparation of medication (filling prescriptions) as well as dilutions, basic restraint techniques, enclosure maintenance and care, medical record keeping, hospitalized patient care. Participation in necropsies as applicable. Students are to summarize journal articles and craft presentations for staff at end of their externship.
This experience provides exposure to a primary layer breeder distribution company that supplies 30-40% of the commercial laying hens to the US market. The student will get the opportunity to travel and shadow the company veterinarian(s), visit internal operations (hatcheries and breeder farms), and possibly attend commercial client technical service visits.
We are an AAHA accredited, privately owned practice. We are prepared to conduct externships for students to complete their DVM studies. Students will work hands-on and observing our head doctor for 4 weeks.
Feline only specialty practice in Houston, Texas with ABVP (feline) board certified veterinarian.
