Description of Elective Experience:

The extern will have the opportunity to learn how to provide clinical, diagnostics, and surgical care to a variety of research species including rodents, USDA species, avian species. Opportunities can also include IACUC and regulatory activities such protocol review, semi-annual inspections, and post approval monitoring.  USC is an ACLAM accredited residency program, and the extern will participate in the didactic program.

Busy, 5 doctor small animal general practice in rural-suburban setting outside Toledo, Ohio.  Students will experience preventive care, sick patient work up and treatment, general surgery, and dental care.   Our team of veterinarians and technicians have a wealth of knowledge and are eager to both mentor and learn from students.

River Trails Animal Hospital is an AAHA accredited small animal (dog and cat) general practice servicing Deerfield, IL and the surrounding areas. Our doctors are proficient in a wide variety of medical and surgical procedures, including (but not limited to): spays/neuters, mass removals, gastrotomies/enterotomies, resection and anastamosis, cystotomies, dental extractions, and abdominal ultrasounds.

An extern will be involved directly with clinicians and take part in all aspects of workup and treatment (medical and surgical).

We are an eight DVM practice and see a wide range of surgery, dental, medical and routine wellness cases. Our students get daily surgery and dental exposure, and are allowed to get hands on experience. Our students get hands on experience with medical cases, emergencies that walk in, routine wellness exams and drop offs. The normal work week is Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

We are a corporate owned (Amerivet) clinic in Grass Lake, MI. The practice is in a rural area with longtime residents and clientele. We are exclusively small animal. Small staff of 9 total: 2 DVMs, 1 PM, 2 LVTs, 2 VAs, 2 CSRs. We have a very collaborative and welcoming team and all are willing to teach and answer questions.

Will be able to have a schedule to see appointments independently but with supervision of veterinarian on site. Will be able to do routine surgical procedures such as spays, castrations, wound repairs, dentals with extractions as well as assist with more complicated procedures such as cranial cruciate ligament repair, medial patellar luxation repair, splenectomies, cystotomies, and exploratory surgeries if available.

Community Medicine externs will gain first-hand experience in providing affordable and accessible veterinary care in communities that experience persistent poverty or have demonstrated other barriers to accessing care. Externs will help provide basic medical care for common illnesses such as eye or ear infections, obtain medical histories, draw and administer vaccinations, and other non-invasive diagnostics. Externs will also have the ability to shadow our HQHVSN (high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter) programs and spend a day working alongside our Community Engagement (CE) team.

An ASPCA APCC Externship provides fourth-year veterinary students with clinical toxicology experience. During your two-week externship, you'll listen to live toxicology consultation calls and attend DVM rounds and lectures. We'll also introduce you to critical analysis of journal articles and offer you a small research project with the opportunity to pursue publication of the results. This program is completely remote and can be done anywhere in the United States.
