Students will have the opportunity for mentorship in all areas of our practices. Our 4 week externship program includes rotations in customer care, patient exam room visits and internal medicine, radiology, laboratory procedure development, clinical pathology proficiency development, dentistry, soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries (fracture repair, TTA and CBLO cruciate ligament repair, femoral head ostectomy, patella luxation stabilization), acupuncture, rehabilitation (therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electro-stimulation, therapeutic laser) and physical therapy.  Students will receive hands-on training in all of these areas of services provided by our hospitals, participate in doctor case discussions as well as journal article review and presentations. The majority of the student's time will be spent at The Animal Doctor headquarters facility with opportunities to spend time at other TAD Hospitals facilities for well-rounded, multi-community veterinary practice. The students work-week will consist of 40 hours per week during normal hospital office hours and work days. Housing assistance will be provided.

We expect senior students to participate in office calls, surgery, rounds, and patient care.  Each day, the senior student will be assigned to a doctor, and the student will be able to observe and participate.

  1. Have an in-depth understanding of all aspects of RSG
  2. Animal observation and recognition of normal and abnormal behaviors
  3. Hands on experience with breeding and veterinary services such as LAI and ET surgery procedures
  4. Properly handle semen, assist with a breeding soundness exam, and ram/buck collections
  5. Identify common pharmaceutical products, know their uses and side effects and appropriate situational use
  6. Proper techniques for administering medication via Intramuscular, subcutaneous, and IV injections
  7. Understand the IETS embryo evaluation system
  8. Hands on practice of general anesthesia processes, identify common medications used in anesthesia,
  9. Proper placement of tracheal tubes and steps for monitoring animals under anesthesia.    
  10. Provide customer service to a variety of customers to meet their individual needs
  11. Understand the fundamentals of small ruminant husbandry

We are a large animal exclusive ambulatory veterinary practice.  The student will experience medicine, herd health, reproduction, and lameness cases.

The student will be given an opportunity for avian disease diagnostics, prevention, and therapy as well as the practical aspects of poultry husbandry and the structure and functioning of the poultry industry. This is accomplished by field investigations and necropsy sessions conducted in the field. Various aspects of the disease prevention through vaccination, including the production of vaccines will also be discussed during the externship.

Students will have the opportunity to work in all facets of private practice. Our practice sees everything from routine companion animal appointments, to emergencies, farm calls, and health certificates. Students will have hands-on experiences that will encourage independent thinking, problem solving, and effective communication with clients and industry professionals. The focus is heavily placed on building confidence and medical widening horizons.

Privately owned and operated, our three AAHA-accredited hospitals provide full-service small animal general medicine, surgery, theriogenology, and urgent care services. Our externship program offers students comprehensive exposure to a variety of disciplines in a fast-paced private practice setting. Students can expect to become familiar with the practice of veterinary medicine through participation in client communication, hospital operations, and medical and surgical services.

We provide the opportunity to work as a small animal general practitioner.  The student will be directly supervised by a veterinarian and will be able to examine and work-up clinical cases.  The student will have the option to discuss cases or disease processes in-depth at the end of each day.  The student can assist in surgical and dental procedures.
