Description of Elective Experience:

Our veterinary externship program provides quality exposure to a varied caseload that includes access to veterinary care, surgery, internal medicine, veterinary forensics, and cruelty intervention. You'll observe emergency medicine, surgeries, dentistry, and inpatient care. Our externs leave with medical training, stress-free handling techniques, and an understanding of the various veterinary career paths available in animal welfare.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Infectious diseases information - Calicivirus, Parvovirus, Distemper, Ringworm
  • Disease prevention starting at intake
  • Best Practices for managing high volume shelter cases
  • Protocols: using them effectively for maximum efficiency
  • Triaging of critical/emergency cases in a high volume shelter setting

    • Trauma - head trauma, wounds, fractures, etc
    • Parvo puppies in shock
    • “Fading” neonatal kittens and puppies
  • Surgeries (based on current case-load)

    • Spay/Neuter techniques (this will not be a heavy focus)
    • Emergency Surgery

      • Diaphragmatic surgery repair
      • Abdominal explores, RnA
      • Esophageal tube placement
    • “Elective” Surgeries - enucleation, amputation, mass removal
  • Practice Clinical Skills

    • Bandage/splint changes
    • IV catheter placement
    • If time/cases allow, assisting in surgeries listed above
  • Efficiency in physical exam
Proximity:
Description of Elective Experience:

The student will work with all four veterinarians in the practice, traveling on large animal calls as well as working within the clinic.  The student will be involved in on farm pregnancy checks, individual animal exams and treatment,  as well as discussions with owners and herd managers on farm management pertaining to animal health.  In the small animal clinic the student will be involved in physical exams and surgeries.  The student will be encouraged to use surgical skills and provide differential diagnoses.

The Banfield Externship Program provides veterinary students in their clinical year the opportunity to practice medicine one-on-one alongside an experienced coach veterinarian as a “doctor-in-training” to develop medical and surgical skills. Each extern is assigned a DVM coach and is expected to complete an individual set of weekly goals based upon their interests and Banfield hospital procedures. Externs will be exposed to a wide range of experiences geared towards developing their clinical skills in a nurturing, supportive environment, ranging from technical applications to inter-personal relationship techniques.

 

In accordance with the State Practice Act, Externship participants are provided with the opportunity to:

 

·         Gain experience in general Pet medicine in a bond-centered practice.

·         Understand Banfield’s best practice standards, code of conduct and ethics.

·         Understand the concepts of quality medicine and preventive care.

·         Understand how both high quality and high case load can complement each other.

·         Learn to perform a physical exam and to record a thorough medical history.

·         Improve technical skills such as:  drawing blood, placing catheters, giving injections, starting fluids, assisting with anesthesia and surgeries under the mentor doctor’s direct supervision.

·         Collect and interpret laboratory specimens.

·         Learn how to order the appropriate diagnostic tests.

·         Learn to establish effective therapeutic plans.

·         Learn how to properly restrain dogs, cats and exotic pets for different medical procedures.

·         Learn how to efficiently and effectively use hospital equipment.

·         Learn how to charge appropriately for services provided and why this is important.

·         Learn and practice effective client and team communication skills.

·         Learn to work effectively with hospital associates and others critical to their success.

We are a community-driven, small-animal veterinary hospital in the heart of Grandview Heights. We see a multitude of different cases each day, ranging from dermatology, to ophthalmology, and wellness. We offer behavior consultations and Eastern Medicine options, including acupuncture. We perform surgery/dentistry 3 days per week. We offer digital radiology and perform full-mouth dental radiographs on each patient scheduled for a dental procedure. We strive to educate our clients surrounding preventative care and disease management. We have a phenomenal clinic culture and team of intelligent, hard-working, and compassionate individuals. We hope to support and oversee our externs in completing patient workups from start to finish so that you can develop confidence in case management. We pride ourselves on medical excellence and superior patient care.

The Center for Bird and Exotic Animal Medicine (CBEAM) is a very busy, exotics-exclusive emergency and routine care practice that is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Our externs spend 5 days a week with us, shadowing and participating in rooms, as well as assisting with routine and emergency cases (including performing treatments and helping in surgery).  We are happy to have students with a strong interest in exotics spend time at our hospital.

AVEC is a very busy 24 hour emergency practice that also provides critical care for patients of the referral practices with whom we share the hospital space. These practices include referral surgery, internal medicine (including oncology and radiation oncology), cardiology, neurology and ophthalmology. Our emergency clinicians are very experienced and come from a variety of universities and internships providing varied approaches to case management. The majority of the emergency staff have completed internships.

Students will work with both Chief and Staff Veterinarians with daily surgical load (spay/neuter, any specialty procedures) and medical cases (wide range of conditions.  They will have hands on experience with all cases during the scheduled externship period.  They may have an opportunity to do field work with our Animal Control Officers and observe any Animal Cruelty Court Cases scheduled.    

 WCAC has an intake of 7,000-9,000 animals per year mainly consisting of dogs & cats.   We also see most pocket pets (rabbits, ferret, guinea pigs, etc) and the occasional small ruminant or poultry.
